Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The familiar saga of the death and burial of the late, lamented Cock Robin is the vehicle for Delessert's huge, provocative paintings, which contribute more to enhancing than to solving the mystery of the bird's untimely demise. Delessert frames the story as a play put on by a group of exuberant neighborhood children donning their bird costumes and preparing their bow-and-arrow props, but as the "play" begins, the story acquires its own haunting intensity and the fun-loving children feel far away. Is there really a child hiding in the costume of a grotesquely oversized fly? Or is it a fish flying above a shadowy lake bearing two strawberries on a white porcelain plate? Are all those mourning birds perched in the bare branches of a wintertime tree somehow children in disguise? Or is this simply an exploration of the landscape of childish imagination? The children who reappear on the last page of the book seem to have had a rollicking good time, and thoughtful young readers may also enjoy poring over the bizarre and fascinating pages of this strange story. 2004, Creative Editions, Ages all.
