Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
"Our Animal World" is a "series that introduces readers to various quirks of the animal world. The books contain surprising facts and carefully leveled texts, making these books the perfect way to hold young readers interest in nonfiction." A little black dog helps identify the reading level of each book. Level I, which is the category for this title, is aimed at students who are reading independently. "Repetition is mixed with varied sentence structures." The book also contains photo labeling and a picture glossary to provide additional support for young readers. A variety of animals who lay eggs are introduced—ranging from the common robin that lays pretty blue eggs in a nest to a squid that lays eggs in cases deposited in the ocean. Some animals such as the Wolf spider carry their eggs in a sack that the female has spun and attached to her body. The full-color photographs show each creature in detail and labels identify the significant point made in the text, such as indicating the egg sac being carried by the Wolf spider. The text poses a final question which this reviewer had to read twice to grasp the point. In addition to the picture glossary, there also is an activity to test retention and a full-page with ideas for parents and teachers that can be used before, during, and after reading the book. The closing page contains an index and links to three websites. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
