Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4-6 What purports to be an amusing book about sibling rivalry is really a rather pathetic story of two children who seem to control their parents. Kelly McCoy, 11, feels that pesty younger brother Ben is ruining her life. What becomes rapidly obvious to readers is that Kelly is no more pleasant to be around than Ben. Situations are forced rather than integrated into the story, and there is so much bickering and fighting that it all becomes pretty tiresome. Malvina, a busybody neighbor whom Kelly believes to be a witch, is far from convincing, and she, too, is under the control of her bratty child. In the end, Kelly tries to get Ben enrolled in a military academy; when she finds out that he might be killed in a war, she realizes she loves him. Meanwhile, Ben, punished for the first time and not allowed to watch TV, runs away; the police are called, and again, Kelly realizes she's glad Ben is back. Her change in attitude is far too abrupt and unbelievable. Instead of sympathizing with any of the characters, readers will come away with the feeling that they deserve each other. Trev Jones, ``School Library Journal''
