Sam’s love of donuts takes him to the Big City where he makes friends with Mr. Bikferd, a world class collector of donuts. But when Mr. Bikferd falls in love with Pretzel Annie, the prophecy of an old homeless woman comes true: “Who needs donuts when you’ve got love?” Mr. Bikferd bequeaths his donut collection to Sam, who uses it to save the old homeless woman from drowning in a basement flooded with coffee.
This is a reissue of Mark Alan Stamaty’s masterpiece of the absurd, first published 30 years ago and out of print nearly as long. With an illustration style that mixes a benign Hieronymus Bosch with an urban Where’s Waldo?, Stamaty’s off-the-wall humor is on target for little kids and big kids today.
Young Sam leaves home to satisfy his craving for donuts, finds a job with a donut collector, and discovers the answer to the question, "Who needs donuts when you've got love?"

I recall the moment of purchase of this book in Daytons department store, toy section. Who would have thought that of all my childhood possessions, this was (and is) my favorite. I have read it 100 times and gazed at the pictures 10 times more than that. And everytime I see something new. What a treasure. If you are not going to buy this book for your child, then buy it for yourself. For years I tried to find this book again, only to run into the $300.00 price tag that accompanied the original. Yes, I have an original paperback of Mark Alan Stamaty's WHO NEEDS DONUTS thanks to a tedious search of my parent's garage. Well now everyone has a chance to re-read this MASTERPIECE. And like the person wrote in another review, I too am going to purchase several copies to disseminate. Oh, and I can only wait until my 1 year old is 4! PLEASE MR. STAMATY, MAKE ANOTHER!!

Few things of mine have survived since the 70s, but my copy of Who Needs Donuts is one of them!! This wonderful book is really beyond description. You just have to experience it for yourself. People of all ages will love Who Needs Donuts.

In a discounted book bin, by the check out line, at the local grocery, I found a treasure. Although, I have the original (somewhere), that I got for a...DOLLAR, I have to buy this book again. I was eight, and I used up my whole dollar, that day, on that one item, instead of the usual 'gum-ball' machine trinkets I collected. The cover grabbed my eye, and I spent HOURS in that one, rather thin book. I wanted to live in a city like that; get on my bike, and ride to that place, like Sam did, and NOW I can!!! I plan on giving this book to everyone, I love dearly, this year, for Christmas. I am looking forward to seeing that hot-dog vendor with that ancient, mummified hot-dog, turning on that spitt...among so many, other, obscure things I can faintly recall... The bag-lady, on the stoop, is patiently waiting...I wish I could say the same!

Finally, this will be in print again! It is a must buy for kids and us adults who remember the 70's. The illustrations are a hoot, and the story sweet! Who Needs Donuts, When you've got love!

This was the first book I received as a gift when I was in preschool. Now that I'm 30, I still find new and funny drawings that I have never seen! I've searched high and low for a copy to replace the original that I misplaced over the years and finally found an old tattered copy from the Missouri State Library.Thanks Mr. Stamaty for a book I'm going to pass down to my kids!!! SC

Who need needs donuts? I do! This is a really great book. In my mind, this is the best Stamaty book ever. The detailed drawings and the 'true love' story are a must for any library. It's a childrens book for grown-ups. Why isn't it in reprint? Come on Mark, get the ball rolling!
