Children's Literature - Kathy Leggett
Global warming is the hot topic. Eco-Pig is an Earth-loving pig who watches over the earth throughout the year. As he is recycling cans on a lovely spring day, he finds that his snout is getting sunburned. How can that be? It was just snowing the day before. Eco-pig explains to his friend Lou that the Earth is running a bit of a fever and is singing off key due to what we as people are doing in our everyday lives. Terms such as greenhouse gas and renewable energy are used and explained in an easily understood manner. Children of all ages will find the facts presented to be food for thought. The illustrations are detailed just enough to get the points across that melting glaciers are destroying habitats, that planting trees is helpful, that riding bikes and carpooling can be fun and helpful at the same time. Facts are included in the end pages to show that the text is based on actual scientific evidence. A simple list of ways to reduce global warming offer even the youngest students ways to help: just by turning off lights when leaving a room, recycling paper, glass and plastic, and carpooling can make a difference. A rhyming rollicking story that is intended to educate a younger generation on how to be pro-active about global warming. A big subject for a young audience and a good book to be used with older students in a debate situation. Reviewer: Kathy Leggett

Gr 1-3–The town of To-Be introduces its most popular citizen, Bernard, better known as E.P.–the “Eco Pig.” Bernard teaches his neighbors how to make the world better by adopting simple habits to live greener lives. Creative, bright graphics enhance the rhyming stories and will hold youngsters’ attention. Each title includes vocabulary lists and advice on what readers can do. Also included is a list of facts that relate to the topic, some of which are highly debatable (such as the claim that “One in four animals is in danger of becoming extinct”), and there are no source notes.
