Shel Silverstein is best known as a children’s book author who wrote and illustrated a number of bestselling books that have charmed millions of readers of all ages. Crossing many artistic boundaries, he was also a noted songwriter and an accomplished playwright. Silverstein first came to prominence in the 1950s as a cartoonist for Playboy, where he assumed the role of roving ambassador for the up-and-coming magazine. This esteemed assignment—due in no small part to his friendship with Hugh M. Hefner—was the auspicious beginning of a most amazing career. Shel Silverstein died in 1999.

Love this book.  Checked it out from the library for a class assignment and will now be buying it for my son!  One reviewer said they were "Blindsided by era specific references about parents hitting the child."  Well the page she is referring to says "And he is great for not letting your mother hit you when you haven't really done anything bad."  I can see how this could be troublesome for some people but really the narrator is a child, so think of it as the child saying it, remember when yo were a kid, you never thought you deserved the spank!  It is a very cute book and with all Shel Silverstein books the illustrations give it just a little bit more!  Definitely a must have.

I bought this book for my nephew without reading it in full. I figured how wrong could you go with Shel? Anyways, my nephew struggles with enjoying reading and I've found over the years that getting him items that are a bit silly to get his imagination going really help keep his interest (and I love the smile they bring to his face!). However, I was blindsided with some of the more era specific references about parents hitting the child, etc (specifics hard to recall because the book is with my nephew). I just felt really rotten on those few pages that call out abusive behavior by the parents and even of the child because my nephew has come from a home life with his mother that was full of that. He is now safe with my family but now I have to skip over that page or make up something that says the same thing but a bit less blunt. Sorry Shel, I probably should have gave it a good read before the purchase. Overall it is a cute idea.

I love this book. I am 25, and still relish the memory of this glorious romp around the pen and ink drawings of Shel Silverstein. I wanted a rhinoceros for years after I read this at the age of 5 -- their true non-cuddliness was a great shock. Read this!
