Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Erin Pelletier
Josh Champs is a hockey player at the Victory School for Superstars, a school just for super athletes. It is the day before the start of spring break and Josh cannot wait to spend his vacation from school practicing and playing hockey. Unfortunately for Josh, his best friend and fellow hockey player Brendan, wants to take a break from hockey and play some soccer for fun with their classmates. When Josh tries to join the game, he finds out that he is not as good at soccer as he is at hockey. He quits the soccer game and goes to the hockey rink, but soon discovers practicing hockey alone is no fun either. Josh is afraid his vacation is ruined until his friend Carmen gives him a soccer lesson. He decides to try another soccer game and finds that playing a sport other than hockey can be fun. A Sports Illustrated Kids book, this book is part of the "Victory School Superstars" series. Each book highlights one student and their superstar athletic ability. The first page is a fun-to-read character profile of the book's superstar and a school map. Abundant, colorful illustrations break up the story into easily readable chunks of text, great for newer readers. This book will interest more readers than just those looking for a good sports story. The group of friends and the school setting will appeal to a wide chapter book audience. Reviewer: Erin Pelletier

Gr 2–4—Young hockey player Josh and his superstar-athlete friends decide to take a break from their respective sports and play soccer just for fun, learning that it's not always necessary to be the best. Simple sentences with basic vocabulary and vibrant, cartoon illustrations make this an easy transition book for reluctant readers. The book has the look of a trading card catalogue, starting with a page about Josh and his stats. It ends with a soccer time line and small photographs of real stars. While the ultimate lesson is a bit heavy-handed, the fast-paced story, action-packed art, theme, and little extras will create a following among younger readers.—Sarah Townsend, Norfolk Public Library, VA
