Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In Ellingsen's debut, three lifelong friends—Jackie, Cheryl and Doris—reunite and start a business together. Cheryl, the high-powered marketing executive, is unceremoniously fired from her job because she has information against her boss. Jackie, the wealthy widow, finds her freewheeling Parisian life called to a halt when she runs out of funds. Doris' placid suburban existence ends when her husband confesses to an affair with his high school girlfriend and then leaves her. Out of money and options, the women treat themselves to a ladies' night out at a male strip club. The next morning, they resolve to start their own Hooters-style restaurant staffed by handsome men and catering to women, and name it "The Whole Package." When the opening goes awry, the women are convinced that their lives are ruined. Their friendship is in jeopardy until Doris has an ingenious plan to revamp the restaurant, which heals their friendship and saves their bank accounts. Ellingsen takes a trite concept and makes it inexplicably hysterical. While she relies on stock genre characters, the friendship between the women is realistic, the characters funny, and the premise well-executed. Readers will giggle and grin from start to finish, and will surely be eager for Ellingsen's next novel. (Aug.)

    Perfect summer read!

I received a reader's copy of this two weeks ago and couldn't put it down. It's the perfect mix of glamour, friendship and high hilarity. While the plot focuses on the romantic connections of the three leads, the real story comes from the caring, wit and intelligence of the characters. Their anger and drive to show what women can do create the driving force in this wonderful novel. And the descriptions of the luscious men ain't bad either.

    Awkward

The book is awkwardly written with phrases and expressions that seem forced and out of place. The characters are not likeable and the plot is boring. It just takes too long to get to the climax of the story. And there are too many cliches: the abandoned wife, the fired career woman. I loved the author's other book. Not this one.

Three friends take back control of their lives

Money problems? Love life in the dumps? Just lost your job? Then sit back and relax with Jackie, Cheryl and Doris in The Whole Package. These three fantastic ladies know exactly how you feel, but these are not just any three ladies, no. These three are best friends who are not about to let life kick them to the curb, they are going to show the world how women roar!

Jackie was the beautiful and popular high school cheerleader who married a man she loved who happened to have tons of money. But after her husband Robert dies, she took off to Paris to restart her art career. When Robert's best friend, George, sends word to her letting her know the money is gone she hightails it back to the arms of her best friends.

Cheryl is a high powered career women playing hardball in a male dominated profession. At the top of her game, until the game knocked her out-literally. After an accident at the racket ball club, her boss walks off with her blackberry and all the juicy secrets she has kept filed away on it. When she shows up to work a few days later she got her walking papers.

High school sweethearts Doug and Doris married when Doris found out she was pregnant, letting go of all her youthful dreams. Only Doris finds herself married to a man who needs to 'find himself' and raising an ungrateful teenage daughter. Instead of finding what would make her happy she reached for the chocolates.

When these three get together, they decide no longer to play by the men's rules but to make their own! While enjoying drinks and male dancers they come up with a plan to open a restaurant serving great food and sexy eye candy!

The first few chapters sets the story up. Once the friends get together the story starts moving right along. I enjoyed the dynamics of their friendship and like all friendships they have their ups and downs. Personalities come out and those hidden thoughts kept buried deep are exposed. I very much enjoyed the book. The biggest drawback for me was really silly things like getting the whole restaurant opened so quickly, the focus more on the theme than the food.little things like that. My personal thoughts about a restaurant with scantily clothed men didn't seem like a great idea to me, but I will admit I loved how it all ended! This is a fantastic testament to the resilience of friendship. A definite recommend!

It caught me by surprise. It was such a good read.

Not the sort of thing I'd normally read, but my niece talked me into it. I feared there would be a cliche around every corner, but it was fresh and fun and real. Good stuff!

    Liked this a lot.

I hadn't read anything by the author before so honestly, grabbed because of the cover. It was really funny. An easy read but with strong characters that I was sad to get to the last page for.

    A must read

This was an amazing book! It was easy to read, I could see a little bit of myself in all the characters. I really liked how the friendships were strong enough to make it through the good and bad times. This was a fun book and hard to put it down until I was done. This was a job well done~ and I would LOVE to have the story continue....

    Amazingly fun and entertaining

Once you pick it up, you will not want to put it down! This book is all about the characters. They are perfectly imperfect. One minute you will have a favorite and the next minute you will change your mind. By the end you will have fallen in love with all of them! It is a perfect read and I encourage everyone to pick up a copy. I look forward to the next book by Cynthia Ellingsen!

    A book meant to share

I recently received an advanced readers copy of The Whole Package. From the second I cracked open the spine and read the first paragraph, I was instantly hooked. I could not put it down. There are laugh-out-loud moments worthy of the best romantic comedies on screen today. There were also scenes that provoked anger and sadness and a sense of unfairness at the situations the characters encountered. Later I would cheer for their accomplishments, both personally and professionally.

It's been awhile since I've read through a novel so fast and felt so connected to what was happening to the characters. I don't think I've enjoyed a book this much in years, and I'm quite an avid reader. If you're a woman, you need to read this. If you're a man, you'll love it, too! There's enough sex appeal and laughter to keep you reading page after page. I've already pre-ordered three copies of this book for some of the important women in my life. It's one meant to share.

    Great Gift!

The Whole Package is a must-buy. Hilarious and heartwarming, this is the book every girl will be talking about. I was lucky enough to see a reader's copy and it was so funny, I had to pre-order one for my best friend.
