Overview

The Wholesome Junk Food Cookbook is a cookbook devoted to wholesome eating. It satisfies our desires for snacks while keeping us healthy. With more than 100 snack recipes from cookies and cakes to ice cream and smoothies, Dr. Laura Trice is on a mission to make healthy eating more fun with treats such as lemon pound cake, Boston cream pie, and chocolate-banana milkshake. While in medical school, Laura saw how people suffered due to illnesses that could have been prevented with better nutrition. Like her patients she realized that she only ate the food that tasted great to her.

In 1997, while working on the set of 7th Heaven, Dr. Laura would bring snacks to the set from time to time and was inspired to make her snacks available on a large scale when she noticed that some of the truck drivers on the set were actually eating her cookies for breakfast instead of donuts! This passion for healthy and great tasting food led to Laura’s Wholesome Junk Food, est. 2001. Her wholesome “junk foods” are distributed nationally in Whole Foods and Harris Teeters as well as numerous health food stores.

An introduction explaining the importance of eating healthy and promoting a healthy lifestyle and two full-color photographic inserts complement the text. Each chapter includes a sidebar with nutritional and cooking tips.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In her collection of crave-worthy junk food-minus the junk-Trice, a medical doctor and CEO of the California-based Laura's Wholesome Junk Food, indulges her followers with recipes for many of her company's products among more than 100 wholesome noshes. However, this is no diet cookbook: what's "wholesome" here are the expeller-pressed oils, evaporated cane juice, unprocessed sea salt and similar products substituted for more-processed (and seemingly ubiquitous) ingredients like saturated fats and corn syrup. Trice's focus is real ingredients, not low-fat or low-calorie variations: chocolate ganache contains chocolate and cream, pie crust recipes call for either butter or oil, ice creams employ coconut milk. Trice also offers welcome everyday treats like 15 simple popsicles free of corn syrup (though Krazy Carrot Pops, made with carrot juice and frozen peas, sound punishing), in addition to expected fare such as granolas, smoothies, and energy-packed baked goods like Cashew Protein Muffins. Anyone favoring salty over sweet will likely be disappointed with a tacked-on chapter of savory snacks. So long as they aren't looking for guilt-free indulgences, fans of sweets looking to reduce their intake of processed foods will benefit from this book.

If you're going to eat 'junk food' treats, this is what you should be eating. Slowly, mindfully, and with great pleasure."

Daphne Oz, author of The Dorm Room Diet
“Dr. Laura Trice allows us to finally have our cake and eat it too, without the guilt. Through simple substitutions that eliminate toxic processed sweeteners, flours, and dairy from many of her recipes, Dr. Laura preserves the wholesome goodness of your favorite sweet and savory treats—and your kids will love them too! Dr. Laura’s Wholeseome Junk Food Cook Book makes eating well easy and delicious. I couldn’t wait to get my copy!”

FaveDiets.com, June 2010
"This cookbook is perfect for those that want to indulge their sweet tooth in a healthier and more natural way. The information in the cookbook is relevant and interesting, and the recipes are simple, fun and delicious. This is a must-have cookbook for anyone who wants to make an easy healthy snack or dessert."

Library Journal
Trice (CEO, Laura's Wholesome Junk Food) shares novice-friendly recipes for cakes, cookies, puddings, smoothies, hot drinks, and savory treats as well as information on saturated and unsaturated fats, carbohydrates, and protein. She helpfully introduces ingredients such as agave syrup, evaporated cane juice (sugar), and expeller-pressed or organic oils, but a list of resources should have been provided for hard-to-find items. Nutritional information is not listed. Rocco DiSpirito's recent low-fat and calorie cookbook, Now Eat This!, uses more accessible, familiar ingredients to make comfort foods. Library marketing.

The cookbook I've been needing: I can use every day!

I just received this cookbook two days ago and yesterday it was sitting on my kitchen table while I was rushing off to a meeting. As usual, I hadn't eaten breakfast and was hoping I'd have time to pick up a latte at Starbucks on my way.

It drew my attention with it's tempting pictures of delicious treats and, as I started to flip through the pages, I noticed these things were really all HEALTHY and made from simple ingredients I already had at home. Within seconds, my morning was transformed: I found so many easy recipes I could make right away (I went for the Banana Chocolate Milkshake!)that I saved time and money -- and ended up with something much better than I can buy in a store.

The Wholesome Junk Food Cookbook is the cookbook I've been looking for, because I can use it every day. It helps me use the ingredients I already have and helps fill up snack time with healthy things rather than (real) cookbook.

I love it and have already given 2 as gifts. Highly recommend it!

THIS IS A MUST HAVE FOR ALL FAMILIES!!!

In this day and age of "supersize me", many families are looking for better ways to feed their families, and at less cost.

This book does both, and quite well I might add! Instead of the regular, middle of the road, processed junk food, here we find some great recipes that are not only awesome to eat, but fun to make. My nine year old even makes some of the stuff from the recipe. It's just good family fun!!! I highly recommend this book to everyone, BUT I will NOT be held responsible for the HIGHLY ADDICTIVE recipes in the book. For that you will have to blame the author! LOL!

    More Than a Cookbook

The Wholesome Junk Food Cookbook is more than a cookbook. It's an educational tool that will help you make better choices of ingredients, choices that will lead to healthier eating, even when it's something decadently delicious on the menu! These choices will also extend beyond the pages of this cookbook into every dish created in your kitchen.

A MUST HAVE FOR ALL FAMILIES!

This book is a must for all customers!!! Instead of feeding ourselves the typical processed junk food, this book seeks to show us a BETTER way to eat! And the recipes are SOOOOOOO unbelievably easy. My nine year old is making stuff from the book! I hope the author is going to do other cookbooks, because we would pick those up in a heartbeat too!"

    Misleading

I thought this would be more about enhancing nutritious content, like "The Sneaky Chef". This is more like suggesting to buy organic and trying to sell the cookies she manufactures. The recipes aren't that different and her suggestions about what to buy organic if you can't afford to go fully organic are off the mark (thin skinned fruits and berries absorb a ton of pesticides, she advises to buy organic eggs so you avoid hormones.)

A Beautiful Book, With Absolutely Wonderful and Mouth-Watering, Healthy Recipes!

This book is one of the most beautiful cookbooks I have ever owned! The photos are stunning, the layout is organized, and the recipes are easy and really fun to make! Plus, who does not appreciate good tasting treats which are healthy too?!
I have tried two recipes out so far( and can not wait to make so many more!):
    1. The Pita Pizzas: Whole Wheat Pita Breads + Mozzarella Cheese + Tomato Sauce= a heavenly, delicious, filling lunch!
    2. Peanut Butter and Jelly Belly Zebra Pops: These are absolutely delectable. The recipe is so easy and fun to make. The perfect summer-time dessert. I used raspberry jelly for this one. So good!

I highly recommend this book to anyone, at any level of expertise in baking. Once you try one recipe, you will want to try all of them!

    Yummy and Healthy!

I am very pleased with this book! It has given me a great foundation from which to work. The ingredients are mostly what I already have in my somewhat healthy kitchen and I'm able to easily adapt recipes for my needs (i.e., egg replacement is 1 tbsp ground flax seed soaking for 10 minutes in 3 tbsp hot water). My favorite recipe thus far is the Peach-Raspberry smoothie. Thank you, Dr. Laura!

    Awesome book

This book is amazing. As someone who has been trying to sift through all of the information out there about how to eat, what to eat etc, the complicated approach most books have taken made it difficult to build a clear understanding and foundation. Dr. Trice is perhaps the best communicator I have ever read on the topic of food, health and healthy choices. I now know how to read food labels, make different choices to stock my refrigerator and order differently in restaurants. As a guy looking to get in better shape and who has with a sweet tooth, I first became a fan of Laura's Wholesome Junk Food. Having now eaten the cinnamon rolls, the haystacks, the home-made fudge sauce on home-made ice-cream from recipes in The Wholesome Junk Food Cookbook, I'm a believer. Another favorite is the chocolate banana smoothie - simple and amazing with just milk, cocoa, and a ripe banana. So good. I've served that smoothie to guests for dessert and everyone wanted to see more made because they loved it and wanted to learn how to make it. This book belongs in every household in America looking to understand health, food and nutrition better while enjoying treats and snacks. This book is for every person who loves sweets but wants to be healthy.
