You can learn a lot of things by reading in the bathroom, but you can also have a bunch of laughs. After paging through a friend's copy of Whoogles 'Can a Dog Make a Woman Pregnant?' I decided I needed my own copy. I continually feel the need to read, even while soaking in the tub and Whoogles was a great change of pace from my usual magazine or history book. Anyone who has ever used Google knows that whether you're typing in a single word or an entire phrase, Google goes out of its way to guess what you're going to type and will display it as an option. The doggedness of this automatic function is at the heart of Whoogles. Some of the best comedy comes from being shown something you would never expect to see in a million years. One of the 190 examples in Whoogles starts: IS IT ILLEGAL TO FO... and the suggestions that Google offers include: TO FOLLOW SOMEONE, TO FOLLOW SOMEONE IN A CAR, TO FORGE A SIGNATURE, TO FOLLOW A COP, TO FOLLOW AN AMBULANCE, and my favorite, TO FORWARD AN EMAIL. As if the actual search results weren't funny enough, the authors, Kendall Almerico and Tess Hottenroth, offer up plenty of clever commentary. At first glance this is a fun, quick read in the bathroom or any room of the house, but after reading through it a couple of times I started thinking about the fact that in order for Google to offer all these possibilities, it means that someone had to have legitimately Googled all those silly and seriously weird questions in the first place. Some of the questions in the book are so amazingly weird it boggles the mind that at some point someone actually Googled, 'Can a Dog Make a Woman Pregnant?' If you're looking for a laugh and want to get a slice of the weirdness that exists in the world, Whoogles is for you.

Being a computer geek and having "SEO" on my resume, this was a very interesting and funny read for me. I've spent hours upon hours searching through Google and understanding how it works and why people search for the things they do. So the book pulled me in, but was it worth the read? and was it as humorous as the authors hoped it would be when putting this book together? Yes. Not only does it boggle the mind people search for "Jesus vs. Frosty" and "I have a big head and little arms" (using Google Trigger Words) but the follow up commentary under the highlighted search is worth the read. I couldn't see someone sitting down and reading through the entire book in one read, but like I said - this is a great book for peeps with short attention spans like myself. A great coffee table book.

There was no sample in the "free sample" so I took a leap and bought it anyway. I'm very displeased with the results and loss of money with no ability to return it. What an incredible waste of money! The author put some thought into the commentary, but this "collection" of screenshots, forced phrases and generic, dry comments would be easier and a lot more fun to do on your own or with a group of friends... for free. Very disappointing!!! Please note I was forced to give at least one star in order to post.

Most of these were amusing, but a few were simply pop culture references. For example the whoogle on page 184. Typing in 'disguise mys' has a top suggestion of 'disguise myself as a sleeping pill' which is a lyric from Hello Seattle by Owl City. :/

You know what really grinds my gears? Lazy comedians who make fun of things they can't be bothered to, you know, Google. (Also, even lazier comedians who start self-referential jokes with a really obvious cliche, but that's neither here nor there.) The premise of this book is fairly interesting -- type partial search strings into Google and pick out the strangest suggestions for string completions. Frequently the authors manage to find something good, but every once in a while they manage to come up with things that, well, aren't funny. And that's where the real humor in this book lies -- the authors missing a pop cultural reference or something like that and making idiots of themselves in front of the reader. This book isn't trying very hard, and as a result I'm not going to try very hard with this review. There's just not much point in buying it; someone else will probably come up with exactly the same thing a year from now, and likely do it better.
