Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The title page gives a clue as to what kids will encounter when reading this book. There are bats, a black cat, a pumpkin (jack-o-lantern), and kids in costumes. Each of the pages has a big almost full-page pumpkin as a flap. The text at the bottom of the page says "Whooo's that…" with the question continuing when the flap is lifted. So, "Whooo's that hanging upside down?" reveals several not-too-fearsome bats. Readers also find a scowling witch, her spider, toadstools, and a black cat. The text below the flap is repetitive, but the text under it varies, as do the depictions of the normal creatures associated with Halloween. The only one that deviates from the pattern is the last flap. This shows a big grinning black cat and a different text below it; readers find a pumpkin overflowing with treats when the flap is lifted. One of the attractive components of the book is the variety of jack-o-lanterns shown on the pages. None are scary, and most are cute. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
