Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Forced rhymes, an unfocused story line and cluttered illustrations make Gadoosh a painful experience. Skene is a volunteer storyteller at the Ronald McDonald House in Toronto, so it is no surprise that the title character of her book is able to heal sick children. But neither the author nor the illustrator can make this story work. Purple-haired and pushing a "cart of rags," the apparently homeless Gadoosh can fling people up in the air and get them to do things like "(sneeze) out pigs in ballet slippers, and leaping frogs with rainbow flippers." Eventually, she finds her vocation at the hospital, where the sick are magically cured by her constant and disruptive "whoosh." Probably the biggest reason the story does not work is that the rhymes are so often uncomfortably bad. Try reading this one out loud: "Things were jumping! Things were hot! All bubbly like a boiling pot. The scene was quite a ballyhoo. A topsy-turvy hullabaloo!" Keith's watercolor and colored-pencil illustrations are overly busy and ultimately confusing. 2002, Illumination Arts,
