Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
This smart Japanese import sharpens children's observational powers. Questions prompt kids to ferret out the differences in 18 whimsical animals. "Who's crying?" sends them off to find the bunny with a teardrop. "Who's hiding?" asks kids to deduce which critter has disappeared, using telltale clues left behind (like horns). Keep this handy for a quick distraction-little ones will find it fun and engrossing. (ages 2 to 5)
The March 2007 issue of Child magazine
Children's Literature - Ken Marantz
Onishi has created a book of visual challenges rather than a story. We are first introduced to 18 solid animals, with their rear ends sketched in line drawings on the end-papers. All are first depicted on a double-page spread from the front with labels for identification. Then, on each following double-page spread, the same animals are shown in the same order, but with one or more answering the question posed at the top of the page. In six cases, "Who's hiding?" has different answers. Other questions include "Who's crying?" "Who's angry?" "Who has horns?" "Who's backwards?" In each case sharp eyes are needed to spot the answer, which can be found at the end of the book. The pictures, like a rogue's gallery, are produced as stylized abstractions, almost as if each simply shaped creature were cut out of paper and assembled into an animal-like object in a variety of flat colors. Youngsters might like to try to make their own challenges.
School Library Journal

PreS - Gr 2 - Sharp-eyed youngsters will have fun with this search-and-find picture book. Eighteen simply drawn, brightly colored animals are laid out in the same order on each spread. A rear view is laid out on the endpapers. The first spread shows the creatures and their names and asks, "Who is hiding?" The next spread shows all of them except for the reindeer who is invisible except for his antlers. This question alternates with others, with sometimes one figure disappearing and other times with more than one change occurring. The next question is, "Who's crying?" It's the rabbit who is frowning and shedding a tear. "Who's angry?" is not quite as clear cut, but is identified in the answer key as the scowling blue bear. This is a clever puzzle book for caregivers and young children to share and to learn animals, colors, concepts. A solid choice for most picture-book collections.-Linda Staskus, Parma Regional Library, OH

    Great learning tool

My son loves this book - it is one of his favorites. I wish I could find more books like it. He is constantly asking 'Who's hiding.' He has all the pages memorized. I strongly recommend this book - it is a must.
