Overview

In "Who's in Charge" Stella gets a lesson in responsibility when she volunteers to watch her best friend’s dog, Bella, for a few days. The only problem with this plan is that Stella didn’t ask her mother for permission. With new baby Marco at home, Stella’s mom already has her hands full. But Grandma agrees it’s good for Stella to have some responsibility as she’s getting older. It looks as though Stella has things under control. It’s only for a few days—what could go wrong? When Bella gets loose and runs away, Stella is heartbroken. Will Stella find Bella before Evie gets back? And where does she even start to look? It’s just another day in the life of Stella Batts! In this early chapter book series, the ups and downs of Stella’s life are charmingly chronicled.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
Stella's best friend Evie is heading out of town with her parents for a long weekend visiting friends in England when they find themselves without a dogsitter for their beloved Maltese named Bella. Stella offers to take care of the puppy while they're away, and her grandmother says it's ok. While Stella's mom is not thrilled when she finds out about the plan—the family is still adjusting to the arrival of Baby Marco—Stella promises to be responsible for her puppy pal. Of course, things do not go as planned. In an unfortunate turn of events, Bella runs away. Although the book is far from pedantic, readers will connect the dots: focused on being "in charge" of Bella, Stella lost sight of the fact that her dad was "in charge" of her, and this created the situation in which Bella runs. All turns out well, as the Batts family pulls together to find the canine. Stella is a realistic character with believable flaws and human mistakes that we can all understand. She deserves the happy ending just the way it comes. My test readers are looking forward to Stella's next book, a tease of which is found in the last pages of this one. Book five in the "Stella Batts" series. Reviewer: Heidi Hauser Green

We love Stella Batts in my house!  It's the first series that has actually gotten my kids to request reading over other activities.  It's very hip and current while also being wholesome and worthwhile.  It feels good to see your kids reading such nice books and enjoying it so much!
