Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathy Leggett
A large format peek-a-boo board book for the very young. Text is kept very simple to complement the delightful pictures. This dark and deep forest is a very peaceful place. It is a special place that will nourish the imagination and allow even the youngest reader to get lost in the quiet innocence of each page. Beautifully striped wings, polka dot ears along with single blades of grass are carefully placed to give the appearance of stitched fabrics laid out on each page. The landscape features a peek through hole to focus the reader's attention to the individual animal that will appear next. In this forest, birds in the treetop answer with a cheep, squirrels answer with acorns they plan to keep, foxes are on the prowl as they creep, and the playful bears are tumbling in a heap. The rhyme of the text shapes a vision of playfulness that may have the reader creeping and cheeping and tumbling along with the characters. Hiding among the trees and flowers, other forest animals can be spotted if one takes the time to look closely at each page. This is a beautiful book to read to toddlers to develop language and an awareness of the world in which they live—a beautiful book for all ages to appreciate the combination of art, story and biodiversity. PreS-K—Simple rhymes tell listeners that the deep and dark forest is home to bears, foxes, squirrels, and all types of birds. The collage illustrations are colorful and childlike, and every other page has a cutout circle that highlights a particular animal. "Who's in the forest, dark and deep?/Bear cubs tumbling in a heap, heap, heap./Who's in the forest, dark and deep?/Owls in the tree trunks, fast asleep." Toddlers, especially, will love the rhyming couplets and enjoy finding the creatures revealed with each page turn of this large-format board book.—Elaine Lesh Morgan, formerly at Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR
Kirkus Reviews
A brightly collaged forest presents itself for young explorers in a question-and-answer format enhanced by die-cut peepholes and repeated onomatopoeia. "Who's in the forest, dark and deep?" There's a lot to look at: In the opening spread, readers will see owls, woodpeckers, a deer, a porcupine, a beaver, a rabbit, a raccoon—and, framed in the peephole, a cardinal. Turn the page, and readers will find out what else: "Birds in the treetops—cheep, cheep, cheep." Squirrels, foxes, bear cubs and owls ("fast asleep") appear through the peephole, but the novelty of the page turn is blunted by the crowd that populates each spread. That said, it's a friendly, beckoning crowd, and there's lots for parents and readers to exclaim over and point out, even if the gimmick is a bit of a bust. All in all, a pleasant outing.
