Library Journal - Library JournalThis is the first edition of a biennial publication designed to recognize the outstanding student athletes of American colleges and universities. Nominations for inclusion are made by school officials and are open to nearly every athletic activity. Final selection is made by the publisher and is based on a combination of academic and athletic factors, such as grade-point average and accumulated regional and national honors. Each entry highlights individual accomplishments and activities and amounts to a brief biographical profile. Somewhat puzzling is a concluding section containing numerous tables of sports records and results, including professional events (Super Bowl and World Series champions, etc.). Such data is readily available in any general almanac and it appears here almost as an afterthought. As a first of its kind, Who's Who in Athletics . . . is an admirable effort to correct the imbalance in scholar/athlete recognition. Whether it translates into patron demand remains to be seen. For comprehensive sports reference collections.-- William H. Hoffman, Ft. Myers-Lee Cty. P.L., Fla.
