Overview

Drawing on research in 20 states, Zimmerman (history of education, New York U.) presents a carefully considered study of how the American public school curriculum has evolved over 100 years, shaped by members of countless school boards and communities who were responding to the issues of religion, race, and the nation. He focuses in large part on the issues as they pertain to African-Americans but identifies a broader, predominant theme: "the progressive inclusion of more and more Americans in the grand national story."
