Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Whose Baby is This? is part of the "Name that Animal!" series. The book is set up as a guessing game. On one page the author has a photograph of a baby animal and gives clues as to what the animal is. Then, the reader turns the page to learn "whose baby is this?" One of the problems with this book is that the clues suggest many different animals. For example, one animal "hatched in a nest made of sticks" the nest "is high in a tree" the animal has "a fluffy coat of soft feathers to keep me warm." The only problem is that many birds could qualify for this guessing game. If a child did not guess the bird was a Hawk, then they could feel frustrated that they did not guess correctly as a result of generalized clues or lack of familiarity with the animal. Also, the animals chosen are often animals that many children might not know. For example, one animal highlighted is a baby arctic ground squirrel. Many children may be able to read the easy text but might not yet be familiar with a number of these animals. 2003 (orig. 2000), Gareth Stevens Publishing,
