Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Whose Nose is This? is part of the "Name that Animal!" series. The book is set up as a guessing game. On one page the author has a picture of an animal's nose and gives clues as to what the animal is. Then, the reader turns the page to learn "whose nose is this?" The text is simple, and easy for a young reader to understand. However, the clues given often are for specific animals that a young reader might not know yet. For example, one animal is not just a seal, but a "male elephant seal." A young reader at the level of the text may know what a turtle is, but they might get frustrated when they didn't guess a "giant tortoise" correctly. Another problem with this book is that the photographs of the animal's noses are grainy. It looks like the pictures of the animals were enlarged so much that they are not clearly defined. A better book about noses for younger readers is Knowing About Noses by Allan Fowler. 2003 (orig. 2001), Gareth Stevens Publishing,
