Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The "Whose Is It?" series presents seven community jobs by looking at the vehicles used by various workers, including school bus drivers, firefighters, engineers, and fishermen. The text asks, "Whose vehicle is this," and describes each with a pithy phrase (rushing toward flames and smoke, carrying lots of children, blasting between stars). The page turn produces the vehicle, and in some cases, the worker, with several sentences describing what he or she does. The book concludes with the child's own vehicle—a bike. A boxed fun fact provides further information. The series makes good efforts not to stereotype work by sex or race. Nevertheless, the digitally created, brightly colored illustrations, while adequate, do not always do a good job of presenting recognizable detail on many of the illustrations. The "before" pictures are outtakes of the following picture with some murky, indecipherable results. The Q&A format seems aimed at young readers, while challenging vocabulary and information load is more suitable for competent second grade readers, making this series useable for a wide audience in the early elementary grades. The back matter includes an index of occupations, a short glossary, an "All About…" section providing more information, and a mini-review quiz. 2006, Picture Window Books/Capstone Press, Ages 3 to 8.
