A handy resource for feline lovers of all ages
... is evidence of both the care and the sense of fun that went into the creation of this happy hodgepodge of cat facts.
MacLeod writes competently and enthusiastically in this companion to Stanley Coren's Why Do Dogs Have Wet Noses? (Kids Can, 2006). Topics include why cats hate water, black cat superstitions, and famous cat lovers. Though the information is loosely organized in chapters, there is a conversational, Q & A feel to its distribution. This is clearly a book for fans, by a fan. There is a lot of anecdotal material and heavy use of speculative phrases such as "One story says" and "Historians believe," but no references to back anything up. The layout is cat friendly, with a fish-bone motif along the tops of the pages and plenty of beautiful color pictures of cats and kittens, wild and domestic, doing their thing. Readers who want to sit back and glory in all things moggy will enjoy this book and the tidbits it offers. It is a good supplemental purchase where animal books are popular or where shelves are already stocked with pet-care titles and variety is needed.-Kara Schaff Dean, Walpole Public Library, MA
