Marty Becker, D.V.M., "America's Favorite Vet," was named Veterinarian of the Year in 2002. Why does my dog take so long to poop?

Who hasn't waited impatiently in the worst of weather and for the dog to sniff, sniff, then sniff some more before dropping a load for all to see, smell or, unfortunately,
sometimes step in. (Of course, we recommend that you stoop to scoop!)

While checking the "pee-mail" is an important form of communication for dogs, the deliberations involved in dropping the big loads doesn't seem to make as much senseùto us, at least. But feces are a much more visible territory marker than urine. A dog might well want to carefully evaluate the pros and cons of planting a fecal flag in some other dog's territory. Obviously, this is a decision that requires careful thought.

In some dogs, delaying is learned behavior. They've figured out that as soon as they're done, the outing's overùso they'll delay as long as possible. Give your dog a little extra walking time, perhaps with a fun game thrown in, and she won't feel it's so urgent to carefully schedule her poop.

Is the whole Rockettes leg-lift thing really necessary?

It is to a dog. Better to put your scent mark at nose level, where other dogs can smell it and the breeze can more easily disseminate it. That's why dogs (mostly male,
but even some females) contort themselves into precariously balanced tripods to get their urine-squirters into position to splash their pee as high as possible.

Of course, some males never really do get into it, especially if they're neutered. But the most precocious males start lifting a leg at four months of age.

For the most dedicated leg-lifters, the act can get pretty amusing when the dog is one of those small ones with a big attitude. While your average Irish Wolfhound can land the highest squirt with very little effort, if you're a bossy little Irish Terrier, you're going to have to try harderùa lot harder. Some small dogs get that hose up so high in an effort to top some taller dog's mark that they're practically doing a front-paw stand.

    An informative and sometimes funny look at dogs.

    Marty Becker, DVM, combines his encyclopedic knowledge of dogs and a great sense of humor into a book that is both funny and useful in informing us of why dogs do and don't do certain things. The reasons for their different behaviors are explained in simple and easy to understand terms, but in a way that amuses us while it informs us. This book makes a great gift or Christmas present for yourself and the dog lovers in your life.

    Informative and fun!

    I loved this book. It made learning about dogs interesting and I couldn't put it down. This book helped answer a lot of questions I had about my new dog's behavior. A great read!

    A very humorous approach to some very serious dog questions. It's a great book to read for enjoyment whether or not you own a dog. Loved the cat book also.

    Dogs - informative and fun

    Those who like dogs - and those who don't understand dogs (like us cat people) - definitely will enjoy this book. It's a fun, easy read, chock-full of interesting, educational tidbits of knowledge about canines and why they do the things they do. The authors, Gina Spadafori and Marty Becker, effectively get the information across with with a light, humorous touch. An especially nice feature is their personal dog experiences and anecdotes, sprinkled here and there throughout the book. A delight to read - as well as being informative - this book is highly recommended!

    If you love dogs you'll love this book

    What I liked best about this book was how well-written and easy to read it was. I've picked up other books wanting to learn about dog behavior only to be buried with medical terminology and overwrought prose. This book is a great exception to that. And of course the book is filled with great information--things that I never knew about dogs even though I've had dogs for 40 years. Clearly, the authors know their stuff. This is a great read.

    Dogs Do It!

    This little book contains the wisdom of the ages, those little secrets all dog know but have never shared. Pet owners who read these Questions & Answers, besides for being entertained and informed, can become much better pet stewards, since being a dog is totally a dog thing, and NOT little people in fur coats. This book also would make a great gift for any pet owner or animal lover.

    Super book for dog lovers!!

    I recently read 'Why do dogs drink out of the toilet' to learn more about my pet dog Maggie. I couldn't put the book down. The style of writing was delightful, easy to read and tempted you to read about each of the 101 questions about your canine friend. The book was very entertaining,witty, matter of fact and answered many questions I had about my dog, but had never asked my pet Maggie. I appreciate the authors research into the behavior of dogs and their committment to common questions and concerns about dogs for which many people don't have the answer. I have order two books for members of my family who have dogs for pets. I hope there will be another book out soon about the next 101 questions about dogs. One I have is why do dogs brings a shoe or slipper to greet you at the end of the day when you get home. My dog always brings one of my shoes for me and one of my wife's shoes for her?? Thank you for a super and funny review of dog pets.
