Puberty, sex hormones, the uterus, and periods can be emotionally charged words. In this book they are treated in the factual way the words should be treated. The menstrual cycle is explained evenly with what each part of the body is preparing for or doing. Each person is different so each girl will experience puberty at a different time and in different ways, but it is good to know there are certain things that happen in predictable ways. Pregnancy is briefly explained. Changes in boys during puberty are explained as factually as the female. Puberty affects a developing body in many ways and so a young person needs to make changes such as using deodorant. At the end of the book is a two page spread where both the male and female changes are explained in a bulleted fashion. The short two page chapter format with one word subtitles is engaging for a young reader. Also, each book in the series has a glossary. Young students could even learn to write papers using this series. This book is a great resource for boys as well as girls. Trying to understand the other gender is almost as hard as understanding the new hormonal sweaty state they find themselves in. Part of the "Inside My Body" series. Reviewer: RevaBeth Russell

Gr 4–6—These titles are organized by questions that introduce the body system, its function, and its care, but the questions are not stimulating. A final spread reviews the topic. Some subtitles don't accurately reflect the content. Why Do I Burp barely covers diet, while How Do My Muscles Get Strong is mostly on exercise. In Why Do I Have Periods, the photo choices put a depressing spin on menstruation. Though the large illustrations, photographs, micrographs, and insets including "Practical Advice," "Extreme Facts," and "Science Behind the Myth" add variety, minor problems mar the illustrations in several titles. For example, one in Asthma Attack shows the heart on the wrong side of the body, and in Pulse, a doctor shown with a patient is not using a stethoscope as the caption states.
