Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carol Raker Collins
The "QEB My Body" series is written for children as an introduction to health concepts. There are notes provided for parents and teachers to guide them in related discussions and activities. In this book, the reader is shown the importance of sleeping. Sleep rests the body, especially the muscles. The heart beats more slowly, and the brain's awareness of what is happening "switches off." However, the brain does dream, about five times a night. Children are encouraged to share their dreams with others and not to be afraid of nightmares. The young child needs about ten or eleven hours of good sleep every night; or he or she will be tired, grumpy, and unable to do school work the next day. It is important to have a routine every night. Rest times during the day are also encouraged. Photos of children, diagrams, explanations, and activities are laid out in a clear and attractive fashion. Among the activities suggested are: keeping a diary of the times you go to bed and get up, relaxing your body one part at a time before bedtime, and doing sums to help fall asleep. Drinking warm milk or chamomile tea, or eating a banana may also make it easier to fall asleep. A glossary and index are included. Reviewer: Carol Raker Collins, Ph.D.
