Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carol Raker Collins
The "QEB My Body" series is written for children as an introduction to health concepts. There are notes provided for parents and teachers to guide them in related discussions and activities. In this book the reader is shown the importance of personal hygiene. Keeping clean—removing dirt, sweat, and germs is essential to staying healthy. Hand washing, overall bathing, flushing the toilet, cleaning food, cleaning wounds, and covering coughs are all discussed. The function of skin and its amazing healing powers are explained. Bacteria and viruses are the culprits to be warded off. Although saliva and stomach acid kill most of these germs, it is important to keep as many germs out of the body as possible. Otherwise, a person may end up with an illness. Photos of children, diagrams, explanations, and activities are laid out in a clear and attractive fashion. Some of the suggested activities are: testing cling wrap, a tissue, and a bandage to see which one is most like skin; and making handprints from powder paint to see how long it would take for germs to come off without washing. A glossary and index are included. Reviewer: Carol Raker Collins, Ph.D.
