Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Bagel
This book offers children a lot in its clear, concisely written, impeccably illustrated story about the life cycle of leaves. Why are leaves green in the first place? How do changes in light and temperature affect them? Why do leaves fall from the trees? Maestro gives detailed yet easy-to-follow explanations. Several pages feature large leaf identification pictures-one reason why this book is a great family companion to bring along while in search of the actual specimens. At the back of the book are activities and places to visit to see leaves in all their glory. A "Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science" Book.
Hazel Rochman
In the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science Stage 2 series, this is an informative concept book that explains what happens to leaves in autumn as they change colors and then separate from the tree. Krupinski's bright gouache-and-colored pencil illustrations show a boy and a girl playing in a country landscape that changes with weather and light. There are also detailed pictures of leaves in different sizes, shapes, and colors. Maestro includes simple instructions for making a leaf rubbing and for pressing leaves, as well as suggestions for places to visit where the fall foliage is special.

My son loves this series and the Magic School Bus series. This series is less detailed than the Magic School Bus series but still informative. This book is colorful, it takes you through the seasons and talks about the trees and the leaves in each season. There are a two activities at the end of the book that help kids pay attention to leaves. Overall it is a light introduction to the process.

I home school my daughter and we found this book last year. Great for talking about the seasons. Beautiful pictures and she can even tell you what leaves belong with which tree now. Great ideas for projects at home in the back.
