Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Tiffany Torbeck
There are no simple answers to questions about body function, birth and death, but this book attempts to give quick answers to complex questions. Every question is asked by a child, with a name and age provided, and then the answer is given in an easy to understand way. This works well for some questions about hair, teeth, nutrition and growing, but for more complex topics, it falls a bit flat. When asked "how was I born" the answer provided is basically the baby grows inside the mom, and is born when it is big enough. This does not seem to really answer the question. The last spread addresses death and decomposition with similarly cloudy results. The illustrations are serviceable, showing children of different body types and races, although most children are physically fit, and no child in this book is handicapped. This book could have addressed the vast differences in body types and abilities, but it chose not to. The glossary and index adds to the text and make information easier to access. Overall, this idea was sound, but only the youngest readers will be satisfied with the answers. Reviewer: Tiffany Torbeck
