Why Don't You Get a Horse, Sam Adams?

Overview

In the early days of America when men wore ruffles, rode horseback, and obeyed the King, there lived a man in Boston who cared for none of these things. No one expected Samuel Adams to wear ruffles or pledge allegiance to the King of England, but his friends did think that he might get on a horse. But would he? Never! he said. Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather N. Kolich
Fritz seizes a curious personality trait and plenty of anecdotes to breathe energy and interest into Samuel Adams' political life and exploits in this delightful story. Throughout the tale, Adams resists all urging to be like the rest of the community and ride a horse. He steadfastly continues to walk or ride in a carriage when he must travel outside of Boston for the first time, and even when he must make a fast get-away from the British. Drawing from a letter written by John Adams describing the event, Fritz retells the clever series of arguments that John used to finally persuade his cousin to learn to ride a horse. Sam Adams' dog Queue gets a starring role, and there is even a bit of important American history mixed in. Hyman's drawings make Adams and several other Founding Fathers seem larger than life, until trouble with the British Army cuts them down to size. This latest reissue of the 1974 title features new cover illustrations by David Small. Reviewer: Heather N. Kolich

Meet the Author

"The question I am most often asked," Jean Fritz says, "is how do I find my ideas? The answer is: I don't. Ideas find me. A character in history will suddenly step right out of the past and demand a book. Generally people don't bother to speak to me unless there's a good chance that I'll take them on." Throughout almost four decades of writing about history, Jean Fritz has taken on plenty of people, starting with George Washington in The Cabin Faced West (1958). Since then, her refreshingly informal historical biographies for children have been widely acclaimed as "unconventional," "good-humored," "witty," "irrepressible," and "extraordinary."

In her role as biographer, Jean Fritz attempts to uncover the adventures and personalities behind each character she researches. "Once my character and I have reached an understanding," she explains, "then I begin the detective work—reading old books, old letters, old newspapers, and visiting the places where my subject lived. Often I turn up surprises and of course I pass these on." It is her penchant for making distant historical figures seem real that brings the characters to life and makes the biographies entertaining, informative, and filled with natural child appeal.

An original and lively thinker, as well as an inspiration to children and adults, Jean Fritz is undeniably a master of her craft. She was awarded the Regina Medal by the Catholic Library Association, presented with the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award by the American Library Association for her "substantial and lasting contribution to children's literature," and honored with the Knickerbocker Award for Juvenile Literature, which was presented by the New York State Library Association for her body of work.

    Comment on Google Search Results

Google search results displayed this book as being reviewed with only 1 of 5 stars at Barnes & Noble, yet the linked to B&N web page shows no reviews of the book - 0 stars.

A conspiracy? Or, perhaps someone has simply done a poor job, given that the people of the United States have served as lucrative patrons of Barnes & Noble, and Google indirectly through the advertising & other revenues they receive. A children's book about an American hero shouldn't default to a one star review on Google. Should any book default to the most negative review possible (1 star) when appearing in Google search results, when no review of the book has been submitted at all?

This behavior does not appear entirely consistent. Searching for the title 'Flag Burning and Free Speech: The Case of Texas v. Johnson' on B & N through Google does not show a quality/review scale, much less a negative review. The title is not smeared simply because it has no review, unlike the Sam Adams book. There could be many explanations.

I'm not against all flag burning, mind you. Never tried it.

I've not read the children's book on Sam Adams, but the opinion of a fellow I respect gives it high ratings. Perhaps your child would benefit from reading both the Sam Adams book, and the one about flag burning.
