Overview

In this book you will meet Dylan, a smart, energetic 7-year-old who shares what it's like to be a child with Selective Mutism. Follow him as he tells his story and his struggles so that other children, parents, teachers and caregivers can understand what it's like to live with a fear of speaking. Why Dylan Doesn't Talk sensitively portrays the internal struggle and isolation that a child with this rare disorder endures on a daily basis. The photographs and text beautifully complement each other to help young readers vividly identify with the author’s son, Dylan. Inspired by a need to find ways to communicate with her child, the author has written an excellent book that is both informative and therapeutic for children and their parents. An invaluable resource for teachers and mental health professionals. An excellent resource filled with questions to help children and parents communicate and to better help them discuss this sensitive topic that may otherwise be hard for children to express on their own.

I bought this book because my grandson has SM. The book is extremely informative and helped me understand my grandson better. Seeing SM through the eyes of a child was educational for me. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has a connection with SM either personally or just through interest.

Whether your own child has Selective Mutism or you know a child who does, this book helps everyone understand what it's like to live with SM from a child's perspective (there are so many books for the adults, it's nice to finally find one for my son). I love reading it with my son and it also helped a ton when we showed it to his teachers (as well as friends and family members) to help them realize what SM really is. Sometimes it's hard to explain to others about Selective Mutism (they just assume the child is shy), this book helps explain what is really happening and shows the struggles these children live with every day (and puts it into easy-to-understand terms that kids can relate to). It helped my son realize that he is not alone. It's comforting for kids with disabilities to know that others understand them. I found this book really great (my son liked it too and is starting to open up to me more each time we read it by answering the questions in the book) and I take it everywhere with me so that I can easily explain what Selective Mutism is. It saves me a lot of explanation - plus it helps others realize that this is a real social anxiety disorder and not just a quiet child. It took my son a time or two to admit that he was feeling like the child in the book, but after a few times he really started to relate and I love that he is able to talk to me about it. I think having our support will really help our son as he goes through the struggles of school. I think it was hard for him to put into words what he was feeling and this book helped him do so. I highly recommend it. One of my favorite parts is that it shows real photographs. I really think that helped my son relate.
