Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Read about the "unpleasant" yet interesting facts about the human body from this book in the "First Facts: Gross Me Out" set. This topic is probably not for polite dinner table discussion; however, the curious will want to know the "why" of some of the body functions involving vomit, flatulence, mucus, and more. The paragraph for each chapter briefly covers the facts; vocabulary words are colored in red and the definition is found at the bottom of the page. Additional information for some of the body functions is located in the "Gross Fact" insets. There are color photographs from which readers infer the bodily action such as the child leaning his head over a lined garbage can. At the back of the book is a glossary that includes a pronunciation guide and a resource list of a few books and the FactHound internet site. There is a biological sciences consultant listed for the content. By learning the facts, children may understand more about body functions; this book would work well in a health science unit. The other books in the series cover "gross" facts about the behaviors of animals, bugs, and pets. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
