Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
Check out this book. It has all the answers about the Sahara and other deserts in the world! This book is from "Why in the World" series and also falls under Capstone's First Facts list. All books in the set are created for the low-level reader who finds interest in easy-to-read, informative text. Seven short chapters offer definitive answers to the questions in the chapter titles. For all books in the series, scientific inquiry is addressed on page two of the text. The page asks a question, tells how to investigate it, and explains the results. Readers are invited to use this page before starting the text. This presents a problem in that students are ready to read the book before being told to use a set time (in this book, two months) for the inquiry before reading the text. The premise is good but children eager to begin reading when they pick up the book may be frustrated by having to wait. Large-print text delivered in a few sentences per page is appealing. In addition, maps, clear illustrations, and sidebars with questions enrich the material. Glossary words are highlighted in the text and explained at the book's end. Close-up photos of deserts all over the world enhance the book. Readers come away with a clear answer to the title question. Add this to a classroom studying places in the world, science, and social studies.
