Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
These six delightful stories from the Dan ethnic group that live in northeastern Liberia have universal appeal. While all the stories are entertaining, some also provide morals. There are "spider" tales that can be compared with the Anansi trickster tales of the Ashanti people. "The Hunger Season" provides insight into the close relationship between the people and the weather. The storyteller's voice is apparent in the retellings. They are perfect to read aloud. In addition to the stories, there is a map to locate the Dan homeland, notes on the stories, and brief biographies of the authors and illustrators. The glossary adds depth and understanding to the tales, and the bibliography leads the reader to more information about the country and the arts. A valuable addition to African studies.
