All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Although best remembered for the classic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Baum's series of early 20th century novels about the fairyland Oz have inspired a number of theatrical and cinematic adaptations, beginning with a Broadway musical version of The Wizard of Oz for which Baum himself provided the libretto and lyrics that opened in 1903, only three years after the first publication of the initial book, and including the 1975 all-black Broadway musical The Wiz. In an era rife with sequels and "prequels" to successful properties that has reached back retroactively to include authorized and unauthorized re-imaginings of works such as Gone with the Wind, Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West purported to depict the back story of the villainess of The Wizard of Oz and her counterpart, Glinda the Good. Of course, Maguire's retelling was a revisionist interpretation in which the Wicked Witch turned out to be a misunderstood character with lots of justifications for turning "bad" (one of them being prejudiced reactions to her green skin color), while Glinda was made into more of a goody-goody than actually good, not to mention being something of a dumb-blonde cheerleader type. Theatrical composer Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin) saw the obvious stage possibilities, and his musical version, Wicked, opened on Broadway on October 30, 2003. In the adaptation, Glinda's role has been beefed up, the better to employ the talents of Tony-winning Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth, though the story still primarily concerns the young Wicked Witch (Idina Menzel), with Broadway veteran Joel Grey as the Wizard, and the story line has been softened, the better to attract a young audience conditioned by the Disney hits Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King. On disc, the score will have a familiar sound to anyone who knows previous Schwartz efforts and their combination of traditional show music with '70s-style soft rock music and choral music. Soprano Chenoweth and alto Menzel are given very different kinds of songs to sing; Chenoweth gets the Broadway belting material, Menzel the more adult contemporary-type ballads. This is appropriate to the their characters. Glinda is superficial and showy, Elphaba (the Witch) so earnest that she is eventually embittered. The score is tuneful and the lyrics often witty. This is not great music, but it is craftsmanlike and certainly efficient for this somewhat questionable project.

I loved this show! The music and lyrics are amazing! Idina totally deserved her Tony award! Everyone should watch this show in light of our current political situation too!

I grew up loving Wizard of Oz... but Wicked blows Oz out of this world! I saw the show in London and fell in love with the music, the characters, everything! I still get the goose bumbs when listening to the music. Defying Gravity is one the most moving performances/songs--it'll leave you breathless.

My sister fell in love with the musical "Wicked" after seeing it performed in San Diego, so I purchased the Cast Recording as a Christmas gift. I don't think she's stopped listening to it since then! The music is positively addictive, and the performances are exceptional. Kristin Chenoweth's performance of "Popular" is both hilarious and amazing. I was quite impressed by how clever the lyrics are, and the music is incredible. It's difficult to understand the storyline just from the songs, but that's only to be expected with a musical. The liner notes are filled with pictures from the production, along with the lyrics. I highly recommend this CD!

This CD has a stunning array of musical numbers from musical. The music is amazing, and it paints a picture by itself. I have seen the play several times, and I listen to the music quite frequently. The singers have amazing voices that really bring out the characters and make the story seem more real. Anyone who is a fan of Wicked, Kristin Chenoweth, or any of the other singers should definitely buy this product. This music is a personal favorite of mine, and it has songs that are uplifting and songs that are sad. Most of the songs on here are beautiful and perfect to listen to even if you haven't seen the show.

I absolutely love this album. I listen to it almost every day. I wish I had seen the actual show but this is close to it. Idina and Kristen are simply wonderful! An unbelievably addictive CD. And it was very nice to hear Joel Grey's unique voice. I'm in love with this CD and now I'm reading the book. You gotta get this!

This CD is great; you feel like you are there, watching the show, while listening to it. The artists are beyond talented and protray their emotions and characters very well through the songs. There are songs on here that everyone can identify with in real life (Defying Gravity, especially) at some point. I am going to see the musical for the first time this summer, and ordered this CD to listen to the songs in advance. It was a great purchase and has made me even more excited to see it live!

Saw WICKED on Broadway with my 13 year old daughter and we loved it! Laugh out loud humor, amazing set. Songs are catchy and Idina Menzel's voice is powerful. We expected glasses to shatter went Chentworth hit the high notes. Can't wait to hear the songs in my home again and again!!

I saw this show in San Francisco when it was in tryout before opening on Broadway. There are some changes that I know of (Joel Grey is the Wizard now, Robert Morse was the Wizard in SF.) There is a new song that replaced another song from the SF run. Those things aside, this is probably one of the best shows to open on Broadway in years. Kristin Chenowith and Idina Menzel are fantastic as Glinda and Elphaba, respectively. Kristin brings a perfect combination of perkiness and attitude to her role. Idina brings a power that I never knew she had, to the role of Elphaba, a girl born green who overcomes that to become her own self. The songs are a great combination of power, fun, and, evilness. Just try to listen to Defying Gravity, Idina's Act 1 ending solo, and not come away humming the tune, and feeling warm inside from the power of her voice and the lyrics.

For those of us who have seen Wicked, this release is anxiously awaited. The show is great, the music superb, and the excellence of the stars-- Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel for sure--- defy description. Buy the book, buy this album, go to New York, see this show... and fall in love as so many of us have. This is the next "Best Broadway Musical" to be sure.

"Wicked" is an amazing show! The CD is great, and the songs are wonderful! "Dancing Through Life" is a catchy tune and is great to dance to. The Original Cast Recording includes Idina Mendezel, who played Maureen in "RENT", which is an awesome show as well. "wicked" also includes Kristin Chenoweth, who is amazingly talented, and I have met. She is a very nice woman, you should see her show. BUY THE CD!!!

"Wicked" is my favorite Broadway musical ever. This soundtrack is full of interesting and exciting music that will entertain you forever-and also has songs that are bound to stick with you throughout the day. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys amazing vocal talent, tantalizing musical features, and the essence of broadway music.

This is a fine cast recording of a great new Broadway show. The story is fascinating and clever, turning the Oz mythology on its head by telling things from the point of view of a sympathetic, unjustly-maligned "Wicked" Witch of the West, keying in on her previously unrevealed love/hate friendship with Glinda the Good Witch. (I do wish, however, that the CD included, as most cast recordings do, a synopsis of the plot, which in this case is rather complex with many characters---you will only be able to fully appreciate the CD if you have seen the show.) The music and lyrics are by Stephen Schwartz, triumphantly back on Broadway after his long-ago successes with Godspell and Pippin. The two stars---Idena Menzel (one of the original stars of Rent) and Kristen Chenowith (Tony winner for the recent You're a Good Man Charlie Brown revival)---are spectacularly good. Ms. Menzel has a powerful rock-tinged voice and a wonderfully emotional, touching approach to the role of the misunderstood green Witch. Ms. Chenowith is a 1000 watt Broadway baby with perfect comic timing and glorious operetta pipes as the vain but endearing Glinda. The high-flying collaboration of these two very different but complimentary female stars make this show uniquely enjoyable and exciting. If you would like a musical with a fresh new approach to a classic fantasy story, a catchy and dynamic rock/pop/showtune score, and perfect performers, get this CD (and then go see the show on stage, as I have three times!).

I've heard a lot of complaints of this show's score being the weakest part of the show, but even if that is true that doesn't wreck the performances. Every single song is not strong in this musical (unfortunately, a trait that follows in many Stephen Schwartz musicals), and yes, i agree with those who say that some songs just seem too long (The Wizard and I, Popular, Thank Goodness, Wonderful). And then there are the songs where i asked myself "Why even have it in the show?" such as Something Bad (HORRIBLE SONG) and I'm Not That Girl, a ballad that has no climax is EXTREMELY boring, Sentimental Man also is not needed. And the lyrics, though Stephen Schwartz has to make up words to rhyme, are much better than those in his other recent work "Children of Eden". But, even though there are low points on the soundtrack, there are some incredible songs that are delivered perfectly especially What Is This Feeling, Dancing Through Life, As Long As Your Mine, No Good Deed, For Good, and the best song in the show Defying Gravity. Idina Menzel has the most perfect voice for the part of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch, and Kristen Chenoweth is equally as talented as Glinda. Both leading ladies have been outstanding in supporting roles (Menzel as Maureen in RENT, and Chenoweth as Sally Brown in You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown) and it is nice that they have the lead roles. On the whole, i think this CD is incredible, and i hope Wicked will go far as a show.

Wicked is so much fun to listen to! It's everything you would hope for in a musical, and it's impossible not to sing along. The incredible talents of Idina Menzel, Kristin Chenoweth, and Joel Grey will leave you in awe. Wicked is truely fabulous!

Kristin Chenowith and Idina Menzel are absolutely delightful in this charming adaptation from the book by Gregory Maguire. I have had it playing at my desk for about three weeks--the more you listen to it the more nuances you find in each individual song that make you want to go back and listen again and again. Such a great story plus a fantastic appearance by Joel Grey.
