Overview

Garrett is a human detective in the fantastical city of TunFaire. And now he’s getting tangled up in the worst sort of laws...

In-laws.

Garrett is set to stow his wandering heart with his fiancée, Strafa Algarda. But for Garrett, even true love comes with its share of headaches—namely, the Algarda family.

Strafa’s family needs Garrett’s unique skills in the worst way. Rumors are spreading that someone is organizing a Tournament of Swords—a brutal contest that magically compels the children of sorcerers to battle until only one is left alive. The winner will absorb the power from those he has killed and thus become a demigod.

Strafa and her family want to protect her daughter, Kevans, from being forced to take part in the lethal contest...and they’ve asked Garrett to find out who is organizing the tournament and nip it in the bud. The only problem is that finding the culprit is most likely impossible. But the Algardas are used to getting what they want....

Editorial Reviews

Like many other future spouses, Garrett cherishes his fiancée, but harbors deep qualms about her parents. Things come to a head with the Algarda family's latest request. They insist that their master detective future son-in-law must get to the root of rumors that some anonymous TunFaire personage is organizing a Tournament of Swords that will compel the children of sorcerers to duel to the death. That request lands Garrett in overwhelming troubles that no honest private investigator would ever want to contemplate. A mass-market paperback and NOOK Book original.

Glen Cook devises some interesting plot twists. One of his better novels, this coming from a near life long fan (ok 20+ years). I pray that it is not the last in this series!!!

The previous book was a bit sub-standard, however this time around Cook is back and writing with the flare of the earlier books. Good... better... and the ending best of all, not really expected and definitely one more day in the life of Garrett.

Sigh.  I'm sorry but, even though I was happy to see that Garrett was back in action, I was disappointed with this latest installment.  It lacked Garrett's usual repertoire with Hisself (Old Bones), had very little action, and mainly consisted of Garrett walking (or, gods forbid, riding a horse!) around in Tunfaire. Not Mr. Cook's best effort.

Garrett is back in one of the best cases he's ever had. Not the best for him per se, just well written and an all around great read. Glen brings back most of the supporting cast, though not enough of Saucerhead. Garrett has to deal with his new life in the upper crust and a mysterious Tournament of Swords. This one will keep you guessing to the end.

Definitely one of his best.
