Wicked Little High

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Steve Klinge
She's had recurring roles on The West Wing, The O.C., and Curb Your Enthusiasm, and her songs have appeared in a wide range of television shows and movies, but it may be her third album that produces some well-deserved name recognition for Bird York. With her seductive, aching alto and her sexy, slinky phrasing, York creates moody, nocturnal music: She calls Wicked Little High "an intelligent version" of a "make out CD." She's had recurring roles on The West Wing, The O.C., and Curb Your Enthusiasm, and her songs have appeared in a wide range of television shows and movies, but it may be her third album that produces some well-deserved name recognition for Bird York. With her seductive, aching alto and her sexy, slinky phrasing, York creates moody, nocturnal music: She calls Wicked Little High "an intelligent version" of a "make out CD." Featuring the beautifully sultry "In the Deep" -- an Oscar-nominated highlight on the soundtrack to Crash, Wicked Little High pairs York's intimate vocals with pulsing trip-hop beats. Like Dido or the early Beth Orton, York knows how to create something organic out of programmed electronics; throughout the album, guitars and piano blend seamlessly with reverberating rhythm tracks and synthetic strings. But the focus remains, as it should, on York's ruminative, sensual vocals, from the pent-up "Hold On, I'm Coming" which alludes to the Sam & Dave soul classic to the prayerful "Have No Fear." It's reasonable to be suspect of an actor's forays into pop music, but Bird York's Wicked Little High is far from a vanity project: It's a beguiling siren call.
