Blimey! It's the Zipper E Button Removal Atom-smasherxtraction! Something bizarre is happening in London's Paddington Station. A powerful gravitational force has taken control of passengers, causing zippers to unzip, buckles to unbuckle, and trousers to fall down, revealing more polka-dotted underwear than ever imagined. Among the victims are Wiff and Dirty George. When a man disguised as a rabbit jumps from the train, the boys give chase. Little do they know they are about to battle Basil King, a master criminal, who leads an army of rabbit-costumed thugs and mad scientists determined to take over Britain. Set in the Beatlemania 1960s, here is the outrageous adventure of Wiff and Dirty George, who must stop one of the most dastardly plots unleashed on England.

Wiff and Dirty George leaned back on their heels and tugged with everything they had, but the rabbit dragged them closer. When they'd reached arm's length, the rabbit flashed a smile of daggerlike teeth.

"Looks like the rabbit's outsmarted the foxes, eh, lads?"

"Mister, we only wanted to have a look at that ... that silver sidk," said Wiff.

"Shut up, you cheeky tykes," said the rabbit. "You're lucky I'm in a good humor, 'cause if I ever see the likes of you two again ... I'll have your throats!"

From the Publisher

"[A] Monty Python-esque farce. . . . Replete with captures, escapes, chases, bizarre inventions and general tomfoolery, the antic tale will keep readers on both sides of the pond entertained." --Kirkus Reviews

Children's Literature - Jean Boreen
London is abuzz after a strange incident at Paddington Station where people's zippers upzip, buckles unbuckle, and trousers fall down, giving everyone more of a show of people's underwear than anyone could ever want. It soon becomes clear to two young passengers on the train—Wiff and Dirty George—that a mysterious man in a bunny suit is behind the occurrence. The two boys decide that they will have to solve the case and bring the bunny—aka Basil King—to justice. Along the way they are captured, befriended by Basil's daughter, and forced to undergo all manner of embarrassing escapades as they try to escape Basil and his henchrabbits. Eventually, they realize that Basil is out to bring down England and her Queen at the National Bangers and Mash celebration and that the only way to stop Basil is to get his daughter, Daphne, to help them bring Basil to his senses. What follows is a crazy, over-the-top conclusion that includes meeting Queen Elizabeth. The story moves quickly with humor throughout, but, at times, this story felt as if it was trying to hard to be funny. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
School Library Journal
Gr 4–6—In 1960s London, Wiff and Dirty George, 12-year-old friends, inadvertently stumble upon a mad scientist's plot for world domination. When the man proves to be one of Wiff's long-lost relatives, the boys embark on a mission to discover his secret lair and upset his nefarious schemes. Wacky adventures ensue as they are imprisoned in glass bubbles by henchmen in rabbit suits. They escape with the help of a would-be princess, just in time to foil the villain's plan to kidnap the Queen of England. This novel is light on character development but strong in fun plot elements. Swinburne employs just enough British terminology to establish the setting, without overwhelming readers with unfamiliar terms. Hand this book to fans of Wendelin Van Draanen's "Shredderman" series (Knopf) and books featuring best friends who land in weird situations.—Misti Tidman, Boyd County Public Library, Ashland, KY
Kirkus Reviews
Two raffish lads pitch in to save the Queen from a mad inventor in this Monty Python-esque farce. After happening upon a vaguely threatening letter, rope-and-knot-loving orphan Wiff drags his best mate, dirt-eating Dirty George, from London to Brighton in search of a certain previously unknown Great Uncle Basil. The two are instantly imprisoned in Basil's underground lab, where thugs and mad scientists dressed in rabbit suits hop about, and pants are likely to drop unexpectedly thanks to a small device dubbed the "Zipper Extraction Button Removal Atom-Smasher." Here they learn that Basil, an ex-spy gone totally bonkers, is out to replace the Queen with a double during the festive Bangers and Mash Day celebration at Kew Gardens. Even with help from Basil's naive but astoundingly capable ward Daphne, can the boys Save Britain? Replete with captures, escapes, chases, bizarre inventions and general tomfoolery, the antic tale will keep readers on both sides of the pond entertained. Instructions for several knots and a glossary of Britspeak appended. (Burlesque fantasy. 10-12)
