Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
An artist and naturalist, Jim Arnosky successfully combines both talents in this first-person account of the animal and plant life he and his wife see each spring on their annual trips south from Vermont. The picture book begins with a description about different kinds of swamps. Every turn of the page reveals a glorious, full-color illustration, frequently accompanied by a pen-and-ink sketch. Interesting facts and short anecdotes read like a story, told by a gentle, observant narrator. Here is a partial description of a cypress swamp—"Fallen cypress trunks lie across the water. And growing up throughout the water are hundreds of smoothly rounded tree stubs called cypress knees. There is more shade than sunlight in a cypress swamp. Daytime looks more like dusk, dusk like night." On the last page, Mr. Arnosky explains that the sketches are like those he uses in his travel journal. He encourages readers to do the same. The author has published over 55 books and won many awards. It's easy to see why. 2000, HarperCollins, $15.95 and $15.89. Ages 9 to 12. Reviewer: Ellen R. Butts
School Library Journal
Gr 1-4-An up-close look at swamps and the birds and animals that live in them. Through full-page acrylic paintings, Arnosky depicts raccoons, alligators, and egrets, all of which he has seen in his own expeditions. The artwork is accompanied by text either on the facing page or set in boxes within the illustrations. Small pen-and-ink drawings reminiscent of those found in sketchbooks contribute to the book's personal tone. The narrative consists of the author's memories and reflections along with selective bits of information about the creatures shown in the paintings. The rather poetic text may be somewhat challenging for newly independent readers. However, the story is a simple one, and the descriptive language combines nicely with the attractive pictures, making this a wonderful read-aloud. With a guide as knowledgeable and enthusiastic as Arnosky, youngsters are sure to come away from this tour with a new appreciation for swamps and a desire to do some exploring on their own.-Arwen Marshall, formerly at New York Public Library Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
"Every mammal sighting in a swamp is a surprise," notes Arnosky as he takes the reader and viewer exploring. The well-known science author/illustrator once again proves himself a helpful wildlife guide. In similar adventures, with the help of his alter ego, Crinkleroot, Arnosky has introduced birds, mammals, trees, butterflies, snakes, and a host of other wildlife. Here, he combines pen-and-ink sketches from his travel journal, and more elaborate full-color acrylic paintings to show the reader and viewer the swamp as he sees it. The brief text boxes embedded in the paintings engage the reader and captures the moment, pointing out how a snake bird swims underwater to spear fish, or how the mangrove crab climbs high into the mangrove tree to escape predators. The paintings, often with unusual perspectives, invite the viewer to experience the swamp along with the artist. For example, one double-page layout presents on the center fold the smooth gray trunk of an enormous tree, rising from the mirrored surface of the swamp, from one side pokes the head of a white heron, the rest of the bird is hidden from view except for one stilt-like brown leg and a fringe of white tail feathers. Another painting has the viewer eyeball to eyeball with a huge gray-green alligator. His palette includes some paintings set in the murky twilight; others capture an unreal orchid-pink dusk, or an orange-gold sunset, with wildlife a near black shadow against the orange sky and water. A first look at an unusual habitat and some of its inhabitants. (Nonfiction. 6-10)Bagdasarian, Adam FORGOTTEN FIRE DK Ink (272 pp.) Oct. 2000
