Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
K-Gr 6 This arresting collection of color photographs, arranged in alpha betical order, is not a first alphabet book for the very young. To be sure, it has animals they will recognize (alli gator and deer) but others will be more difficult (vole and quail); still others will prove confusing because of their labels: X is xanthid crab, Y is yellow-bellied marmot, Z is zone- tailed hawk. Children will be more likely to identify these as crab, mar mot, and hawk; it is just as likely that newcomers to alphabet books would guess that the grizzly bears pictured are for B and the possum is for O. Placed in nonfiction, this volume will appeal to animal lovers and delight browsers and nature photographers; the images captured are superbly com posed and clearly reproduced. The picture of the harbor seal (for H) alone is worth the purchase price. The book concludes with brief notes describing each animal's habitat and characteris tics.
