The first in a new wild cards cycle is, perhaps coincidentally, also the first from the new publisher of this highly popular shared-world saga of realistic superheroines. It presents the wild cards with a total threat--a secret cabal that wishes to wipe out all the wild cards, beginning with the "jokers," the underground and more deviant victims of the wild-card syndrome. In the hands of eight talented authors, several of them series regulars, this makes for a brisk, well-told tale with plenty of action and suspense, although the eight constituent stories don't cohere as a single narrative quite as well as was perhaps intended. Devotees of the saga will insist on finding this volume in most sf collections.
