Past Sins Cast a Long Shadow

Dallas Phillips refuses to believe her father committed suicide, even though things were tough on his farm and he was deeply in debt. When she hears he'd told a neighbor about an upcoming windfall, she grows suspicious, and her suspicion only deepens when she realizes someone is lurking in the nearby mountains after dark.

For help, she turns to Trey Jakes, local police chief—and her former lover. As they begin to investigate, another mystery comes to light. Trey's mother is beginning to remember events from thirty years ago, something shadowy that happened in the mountains, and Dallas's father was there, too. Is what happened that night connected to his "suicide"? As they search for the truth, Trey and Dallas struggle to fight their attraction, but they may not be able to fend off another force—a killer who's more than willing to kill again to make sure old secrets stay buried.

The dark and edgy beginning of the story, with accidents and murders, in the mall town up in the West Virginia mountains pulled me right in. While the town is mourning one of the beloved residents, and wondering about the apparent suicide, the story of the people of the town starts to unfold. I could feel the atmosphere of the town, the sorrow of Dallas, as she is mourning for her father. She left over six years ago, to chase her dreams, leaving the love of her life, Trey, behind. Trey has never stopped loving Dallas, and now has a front seat view into the mystery of her father's death. The story is told from multiple points of view, nearly everyone in town gets their fifteen minutes. So much is happening in this little mountain town, and at times, I wasn't sure how it all was relevant to the tale. Part of the story is unfolding via dreams and memories from the past, drawing a timeline through two generations of the town. Trey and Dallas obviously have a connection. His patience, sweetness, protective and forgiving nature, while still a complete alpha male, made him easy to like and admire. Dallas has focused on her career for the past years, but as soon as she gets back to her home ranch, she settles down to the old farming routines, the career behind, like a shield she had used before. The passion runs hot between them, and even though the time apart, they still know each other better than anyone else. The suspense and mysteries were twined into the story masterfully. The interesting little town, and its people were fascinating, the 'who-done-it' for the murder was intriguing. Totally hooked on the story, I stayed up till 3:30 am to finish the book, to find out who did it. You can imagine my disappointment at the end, when I realized, that was not solved in this first book of the series. Also, there's no information if the next book, that comes out in September, will continue the story with Trey and Dallas, or is there another couple in the focus. ~ Four Spoons

Sharon Sala starts off her new Secrets and Lies trilogy with the first book, Wild Hearts. Readers who are looking for an edgy writer, who develops complex mysteries will love Sharon Sala. She has a unique writing style that will appeal to many different kinds of readers. Sala brings readers a story of a would be suicide that ends up being murder. A murder that brings a lot long buried secrets to the surface in a small town, without a lot of places for a killer to hide... except in plain sight. Well written romantic suspense. Sharon Sala is one of those writers that really makes you think. She gets deep into the mystery side of her romantic suspense novels and she drags the reader right in with her. Before you know it you are knee deep in clues and finding more motives than you can shake a stick at. In Wild Hearts, readers are treated to a mystery arc that will continue throughout all three of the projected books in the series. So if you were looking for something that would wrap up in a neat little package, this isn't the book. It is however, a very well written mystery that has a bit of a cliffhanger. The romantic side of things could have been a little better, but the mystery really made up for it. Heroine, Dallas is looking into the suicide of her father. When it becomes clear that this was murder, not suicide, she enlists the help of an old flame, the local police chief, Trey. I liked these two together, but as with any good Sala book, it was more about the mystery than the romantic connection between the hero and heroine. I wanted more interaction and more emotional or even sexual tension. I wanted to like these two together, but they fell just a little flat for me. I liked the whole past and present colliding atmosphere that Sala created with this book. She gives the reader a current murder to solve, but she makes that murder contingent on a secret from thirty years ago. I liked how Sala connected the different time lines by clues and memories. It was an ingenious idea and she really pulled it off. I want to know what in the world happened back then and how it relates to the events going on in Dallas' life now. Bottom Line: Amazing mystery. Eh... on the romance. I thought Sala did a masterful job of setting up this story and drawing the reader in. She gives the reader a strong heroine who knows how to run an investigation. A hero that has all the right connections and a mystery that will keep readers guessing. The killer is hiding in plain sight and the motive is anything but typical. I wanted more from the romantic side of things, but then again this is a Sharon Sala book... heavy on the mystery, light on the romance. You'll definitely want to read it and you'll be chomping at the bit waiting for the next one.

This is a second chance romance with a twist.  The intricate plot was completely believable and so engaging that I couldn’t put it down.  By developing the story the way that she did, giving readers insights and angles the main characters don’t have, Sala really ramps up the suspense factor.  I like how the past and present were directly correlated.  Events were set in motion that affected everyone involved.  Puzzling out who ‘the killer’ was kept me on my toes and thoroughly engaged in the story while the chemistry and renewed romance between the main characters kept my pulse racing and had me wondering how it would all end. Sala has developed some spunky characters that will make you smile.  I found the main characters approachable and easy to relate to.  Their relationship with one another was complex and very rewarding.  The complete naturalness and unpredictability of their actions made them seem ever so real.  The secondary characters in this novel were brilliant as well.  They rounded out the story very well.  The ‘bad guys’ actually gave me chills.  I enjoyed the suspense in the way that ‘the killer’ was developed.  I’m still trying to puzzle it out. This is my first novel by this author but it definitely will be far from my last. Her unique writing style and stand out plot kept me hooked from the first page to the very last.   Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

Story was ok. I stayed up late reading it to the end to see who did it. But the story ended without it. No clues to let you know if there's another book coming out or anything. So another words, your left hanging. Which really ticked me off. I hate these kinds of books and wont buy anymore of this authors books. It would be nice if you're warned a head of time that your going to either be left hanging or that this is a series of book(S) your going to have to buy in order to find out who the killer is. Waste of my time and money.

4 STARS This the first book of a trilogy. I want the next two books soon. Wild Hearts is full of suspense, drama, romance and mystery. It is full of surprises. I like Trey and the rest of the characters. The ending chapters are really good. I wanted to cheer too. One mystery happened in May 1980. There is a car chase. The car in front is running from something and the teenagers are drunk and scared. The ones that make it can't remember anything. Now one of them is starting to have nightmares. Dallas Phillips left home after graduation. She is a news reporter. Her father has died so she is coming back home. She does not believe her father killed himself. She had loved Trey but he did not want to live in big city and she did not want to stay. Trey Jakes is police chief. He is still single. He calls Dallas and gives her the bad news. He still loves Dallas. He is brave, honest and cares about the people around him. Trey's mother Betsy finds Dick's body. Both Betsy and Dick were in the car accident years ago. Dallas is the central character of this story and I have to admire her. She is willing to fight for her father both mentally and physically. Some story lines continue into at least the next book. So we don't know what characters are ones not to trust. I really want to know. There are a few love scenes in the book. Easy to skip over if you want to. I was given this ebook from Net Galley and Harlequin. In return I agreed to give honest review of Wild Hearts.

Good read

J: Interesting but way too much drama, too much talking, too much small town life, not nearly enough suspense and some of it just not believable. It seems that the real ending depends upon at least another story, but this one does not stand alone quite well enough to make another story appealing. I am disappointed in this one.
