Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Alison F. Solove
Elk are massive animals with huge antlers, related to "antlered deer" from around the world and up to 5.2 million years ago. They were an important part of Native American life and culture. Once populating most of the U.S., elk now roam in only twenty-eight states and five Canadian provinces. Their fur changes seasonally to accommodate different temperatures and landscapes. Their skeletons and organs are complex. Elk live in herds and communicate through sounds and expressions, including a complicated "Morse code" and violent mating rituals. Cow elk carry babies for eight months and then mind them in a "nursery herd." Some elk migrate seasonally up to one hundred miles. Elk are not only threatened by several natural predators, but also by habitat destruction. People can help elk by providing tracts of land on which they can live. Love's book has a host of interesting facts and beautiful, full-color illustrations. However, the book lacks structure and is difficult to use. The chapter organization is unclear, especially because chapter titles like "Majestic Monarch" don't tell the reader what to expect. Pages often include text in up to five different fonts or in several different boxes, leaving the reader confused about the order in which they should read the information. The book does include an index, though it doesn't include some useful words like "diet" or "reproduction" that would make it more useful as a reference material. It ends with a short fill-in-the-blank field notes page and three cut-out bookmarks. Overall, this book seems like a national park gift shop item readers are unlikely to pick up more than once.
