Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Banished centuries before with the imprisonment of the gods, the magic continues to return, slowly, to the land of Elda in Fisher's densely plotted sequel to Sorcery Rising (2002). Juggling six major plot lines, the book covers the landscape of Elda from frozen north to volcanic south. In between, the seafaring Eyran islanders try to keep their Viking-like culture from falling under the domination of the more populous, Italianate Kingdom of Istria. Katla Aransen, swordmaker and daughter to Aran Aranson, lord of Rockfall, finds that her ability to commune with the earth forces her to accept a destiny not of her own choosing. Her father, less blessed, tries to make his fortune in an ill-fated expedition to the far north. Meanwhile, avatars of the captive gods move toward the center of the brewing war between Eyra and Istria. In addition to the large and somewhat unwieldy cast, with multiple links among them, Fisher fills the book with historical asides, myths, songs and folklore. But even if certain problems remain unresolved, the plot does advance. Noticeably, characters react according to their cultural backgrounds, providing the kingdoms and peoples with some sense of individuality. Nor are the obvious heroes or villains without both flaws and virtues. If the whole seems too close to romanticized history, it compensates with engaging details and strong female characters. (July 1) FYI: Fisher is also the author of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings Visual Companion. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
VOYA
The sequel to Sorcery Rising (DAW, 2002/VOYA December 2002), the first book of Fool's Gold, features a large tapestry of characters. It begins in midstream but provides enough backstory to fill in the gaps so that those who have not read the first book can follow the characters on their various adventures. Wild magic is at the heart of the various challenges they face, whether they realize it or not, in a classic tale of greed, avarice, insanity, and war. Aran Aransen, a man possessed by a treasure map, builds a ship and sets sail for the arctic north. His fiery daughter, Katla Arensen, is talented at the forging and use of blades, an extension of the earth magic that gives her power over stones and climbing. The king is in thrall to the beautiful Rosa Eldi, the Rose of the World, understandably so because she is a goddess who arouses lust in all who behold her. And the apprentice who stole Rose away from his Master has put in place forces that might spell doom and destruction for all. Unwittingly contributing to the coming chaos is Saro Vingo, an unloved adopted son, brutalized by his older brother and mistreated by his parents, who now wears a powerful death stone around his neck. Sea monsters, battles, intrigue, and betrayal appear in episodic chapters that jump from character to character all the way to the page-turning conclusion. This treat for fans of complex, large-scale fantasies full of intrigue, challenges, and struggles is populated by strong female characters. It is a complex, rich fantasy that will appeal to teens. VOYA CODES: 4Q 3P S A/YA (Better than most, marred only by occasional lapses; Will appeal with pushing; Senior High, defined as grades 10 to 12; Adult-marketedbook recommended for Young Adults). 2003, DAW, 504p., Ages 15 to Adult.
—Bonnie Kunzel
Library Journal
On the world of Elda, the rival lands of Eyra and Istria stand once again on the verge of war after many years of peaceful trade. As magic returns to the world, the lives of a former apprentice-turned- murderer; a young woman who can feel the pull of rock and metal; a young nobleman with the ability to read minds; and a woman whose beauty inspires lust in any man who sees her come together in ways that may forever alter the world. Fisher's sequel to Sorcery Rising blends large-scale intrigues with personal accounts of struggle and courage in a complex tale that belongs in most fantasy collections. Epic fantasy at its best

At the latest Allfair, the kingdoms of Eyra and Istria put their differences aside to trade manufactured goods made by merchants from both nations. Virelai, who fled Sanctuary and his master in the arctic regions of the north, takes only the Rosa Eldi and the cat, both being more than they seem. While at the Allfair, Ravyn Asharson, king of the Northern Isles, the Rosa Eldi for his wife and they both travel to his estate in Eyra.
Also at the Allfair is Tycho Issian, the Lord of Cantara, who takes one look at the Rose of the ward and wants her. Before he can claim her, she disappears and the Lord forces the sorcerer Virelai and his cat into bondage to him. Once it is discovered that the Rosa Eldi is in Eyra, he whips the Istrian lords into a frenzy, blaming them for the magic that has been set loose in the world. As both sides prepare for war, the Rosa Eldi begins to remember who and what she is and when she realizes what was done to her the entire world of Elda will never be the same.
There are various sub-plots in this epic fantasy that seamlessly tie into the main story line but what direction it will finally take will be found in the next tale of 'Fool's Gold.' There are varying characters that all play pivotal roles in the plot and the reader understands the motivations and passions driving each one. It will be hard to wait for the next installment in this well written and exciting fantasy series that is so reminiscent of the Sword of Shannara trilogy.
Harriet Klausner
