Overview

The Marquis of Chase is not a reputable man.

He is notorious for his wretched morals and is never received in respectable houses. The ladies of the ton would never allow him in their drawing rooms . . . though they were more than willing to welcome him into their bedchambers. Ejected from his father's house at the age of sixteen, he now lives a life of wanton pleasure. So what could the Marquis of Chase possibly want with Juliana Merton, a lovely, perfectly upstanding shopkeeper with a mysterious past?

A moment's indiscretion?

A night's passion?

Or a lifetime of love?

Even the wildest rakes have their weaknesses . . .

    more from this reviewer

    wonderful Regency romance

Known throughout the Ton for his rakish behavior the Marquis of Chase relishes chasing women but his ultimate objective is recovering a rare medieval manuscript Burgundy Hours once owned by his family. When he learns the artifact is being sold at auction as part of the Tarleton Collection, he hires rare book expert Juliana Merton as his purchasing agent.

Widower Juliana instructs her client on the care of a book collection and finds the rake has redeeming values he conceals from society. He is especially aware of his reputation as a rogue and how that could prevent him from becoming guardian to his beloved sixteen year old sister. At the same time he sees beneath the veneer of the bookworm widow to a warm caring heart. As they fall in love, Cain notices a pattern of accidents occurring with Juliana at the center. He believes someone wants her dead either because of her book knowledge or related to the death of her spouse whom Juliana believes was murdered.

The first Burgundy Hours Regency romance is a wonderful pairing of two people who the Ton would frown on them marrying but would encourage trysts. The lead couple makes the tale as they quickly learn not to judge a book by its cover. With the interweaving of rare book collection during the Napoleonic Era enhancing the fine story line, readers will enjoy the adventures in love and danger of the Wild Marquis.

Of the all the books in the Burgundy Club series, THE WILD MARQU

Of the all the books in the Burgundy Club series, THE WILD MARQUIS is my favorite. What unfolds best here is the discovery period when Cain and Julianna fall in love. It happens gently. Of course the pair are attracted to each other, but Cain loves women and Julianna has been a widow for nearly a year. Neville's writing is deft and clever as the couple tumble and trip over seemingly insurmountable obstacles considering their differences in class status. I found it interesting Cain spent more time with women and Julianna more time with men in their formative years. Honestly, there's more plot than I expected in a romance novel, and it's meaty. Take out the romps and the book would remain standing quite erect as a mystery. Neville has given the reader characters to care about fully. Plus, there's Quarto the dog. And the books! Oh, the books! I highly recommend this jewel.

I truly enjoyed Neville's first installment of the Burgandy club

I truly enjoyed Neville's first installment of the Burgandy club. This book was sweet, romantic, exciting, and greatly appealing to fellow book lovers.

The main characters are Cain (The Marquis of Chase) and Juliana. While Cain was pretty common in being a sly man, renown for his sexual premise but secretly a wounded, sensitive soul. Blah blah. In that sense, I felt like it was pretty common but I fell in love with Juliana. A recent widow, she was nevertheless a strong women trying to make do in a man's world. She is cunning and intelligent in the novel and it is exciting to see her become more free and open as her relationship with Cain goes on.

Then there's the books. The story is primarily focused on the world of book collectors with Juliana being a bookseller. Throughout the story they go to very important auctions, which may seem to being boring reading for some.

    Wrong.

I was shocked to find these auction scenes more exciting than a fight scene and more intelligent than game of wits. The lives of the bibliophiles was amusing and interesting.

But the book wasn't perfect. The plot, aside from the book aspect, was pretty common, though I won't give it away to those who wish to read it. The romance, while spicy at times, seemed to go at a nice pace at the beginning and then seemed to stutter in the middle to wait for the plot points to catch up, leaving some pretty boring scenes.

In the end, I gave the book a 3, for it wasn't a mind blowing piece of work but I did enjoy it.
