Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
This vibrant pop-up from the veteran paper engineers explores the vast world of ocean biology from tide pools to deepest depths. Flaps, sidebars, and panels describe the characteristics of specific animals ("Sea stars use hundreds of tiny suction cups to eat, move, and cling to rocks"), and each spread features pull-down panels, which focus on topics like bioluminescence. Large 3-D compositions--a splashing blue whale, a toothy purple anglerfish, a leopard seal--leap off the richly layered pages, representing the abundant diversity of the sea. A visually dynamic book that seamlessly blends education and entertainment. Ages 6–up. (Sept.)
Children's Literature - Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
Each of the five double pages opens to a spectacular pop-up. The first, "Tides of Life," includes facts about the tide zones along with pull-down notes on the creatures that live there plus the pop-up panorama of life there. Next we are on the open sea, with both a rising blue whale and a pull-down on symbiosis. Below 3000 feet in the midnight zone of the sea are odd creatures. Underwater coral kingdoms include camouflaged characters amid the coral. The final pages display the frozen oceans of Antarctica with information about those that survive there. The naturalistic painted underwater seascapes plus all manner of vegetation and life there are both informative and esthetically impressive. Readers are required to interact with the pop-ups and pull-outs and -ups to acquire all the information. The stunning dioramas of the areas of the ocean are filled with visually complex details demanding attention. And the pop-ups open and fold easily. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
Kirkus Reviews
A 3-D tour of the oceans with an emphasis on the sensational. From fairly benign tide pools and open sea, the Santoros take readers to the midnight zone (a toothy anglerfish leers in the central pop-up), coral reefs (a great white shark hurls itself through the branching formation) and Antarctica (a leopard seal pursues a penguin, unaware of the orca about to chomp on it). Ranged round the central pop-ups are short paragraphs of related facts, which are supplemented by slide-out tabs covered with further information. Readers who stop to peruse these will pick up a fair amount. "Green sea turtles are a species so ancient that it witnessed the extinction of the dinosaurs"; "Antarctic cod produce proteins that act as antifreeze to lower the freezing point of their blood." A showy introduction to a fascinating subject. (Pop-up nonfiction. 6-10)
