Wild Rosie

by Mary Morgan

"Rosie is wild. She bounces her baby brother on the bed!... Rosie spins around and around until she is dizzy." Sometimes Rosie really lets loose! She bounces, dances, spins, squeals -- and has all kinds of wild fun.

Preschoolers will recognize themselves in these vary simple books that show Rosie the mouse feeling both gentle and wild. One sentence per page tells how she cuddles her dolls, turns pages carefully, revels in the bath water, or "bounces her baby brother on he bed". The small size of the books, the pastel watercolors, and the gingham borders are cozy.

Charming little mouse Rosie displays the two sides of her toddler personality in this twin set of paper-over-board books just right for small hands. In her gentle mode, Rosie "tickles a fuzzy caterpillar" and "kisses her baby brother very softly"--a model of etiquette for youngsters. Each book provides six or seven examples of Rosie's behavior, with sunny-bright artwork and pastel polka-dot or gingham borders against a white background. When Rosie's wild side gets the best of her, she lets loose by finger painting and dancing and splashing in the tub; the naughtiest thing she does is strew her food, and look winsomely uncoordinated doing it, in the spread for "Rosie likes to play with her peas." Morgan (Where Do Bears Sleep?) creates an affable heroine who has a healthy measure of spunk; children will need both books in order to get a complete picture of Rosie. Ages 1-3. (June) FYI: Rosie plush finger puppets are also available at $5.99 each. A 16-copy mixed display containing four of each book plus eight finger puppets is available as well as an eight-copy pack of finger puppets only. Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

PreS-These slight, undersized picture books depict opposite sides of a small mouse's personality. When Rosie is cuddling her doll, looking at books, smelling a flower, or kissing her baby brother, she is gentle; but when she bounces her baby brother on the bed, finger paints swirly pictures, sings and dances (instead of napping), and splashes and squeals in the tub, she is wild. Toddlers will relate to Rosie's behavior and enjoy identifying with her. Cheery, expressive illustrations in sunny colors capture the whimsical spirit of the texts.-Sally R. Kirkus Reviews
Wild Rosie (24 pp.; Jun.; 0-7868-0475-0): When Rosie the mouse goes wild, paint flies and peas pummel the floor in a preschooler's ideal revelry. Rosie's excitement is boisterous but never exaggerated; she splashes in the tub, twirls in dizzying circles across the lawn, and hops around on the bed with her baby brother. In contrast, a companion book, Gentle Rosie (0-7868-0474-2) contains more calming activities. Morgan's illustrations are personable and friendly, while her intimate approach will make toddlers want to cuddle right up to hear more about Rosie. (Picture book. 4-8)
