Overview

It was a time of love and war, heroism and miracles - a time when men and women still danced up the wild steps of heaven, driven by magic and faith, enraptured by the joy of la vida. Against this spellbinding backdrop, the critically acclaimed author of Rain of Gold creates a powerful, moving portrait of his father's family - the Villasenors - who in their courage and love of life represent the whole passionate history of Mexico. In Wild Steps of Heaven, Victor Villasenor breathes life into his father's family, and in particular, the Villasenor women. Mothers and daughters, sisters and lovers - their faith transcends the madness that surrounds them, and their love is all-powerful, life-giving, and touched by the miraculous. Margarita is the indomitable Indian matriarch who guards her family and conquers her enemies with the cutting edge of unconditional love - and a touch of magic. As a young woman, she was swept away by Juan Jesus Villasenor, who carried the blood of Spanish royalty in his veins - and who, unarmed, once wrestled with the great serpent that held his village hostage...and won. Together, Don Juan and Dona Margarita would create a dynasty on the eve of the Mexican Revolution. Their daughters...Emilia and Luisa, who find courage in their mother's faith, and searing, explosive passion amid the turmoil of war. Their sons...Jose, who becomes a legendary horseman and a hero of the revolution. And Juan, the youngest, Victor Villasenor's father, through whose eyes this brilliant, tumultuous saga unfolds. Rejected by his own father, little Juan would learn from his mother how to live and love con gusto y amor, and from his brother, Jose, how to be a man.

Rain of Gold traced the journey made by Victor's mother and her family from war-ravaged Mexico to California during the Prohibition era, where she met and married Victor's father, Salvador. Wild Steps of Heaven goes back in time to when Sal was a young boy in Mexico, before his own family migrated to the U.S. 4 cassettes.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
In this second volume of Villaseor's (Rain of Gold) Mexican trilogy, he relates the history of his father's family in the highlands of the western Mexican state of Jalisco in the early 20th century. His father was descended from a noble-blooded Spaniard and an Indian woman whose conflicting cultures epitomize those of the Mexican nation. Indeed, says Villaseor, ``the story of my father's people was filled with so much rage and violence and yet this incredible faith in God.... [It] was the story of all Mexico, and the story of Mexico was the story of the last five hundred years of European dominance all over our globe.'' Drawing on his father's stories and those of other members of his extended family, the author reconstructs their loves, lusts, madness, deaths, births, hunger, massacres, joys and heroism in a folkloric tale reminiscent of the magical realism of Gabriel Garca Mrquez. His characters and the events they live through are so outrageous that familiar stereotypes dissolve in their wake and magnetic individuals come to life, taking both the good and the bad as givens, supported by fierce love of the earth, their families, God and, above all, la vida. Library Journal
This fictionalized account of the 1910 Mexican Revolution focuses on the near- destruction of the author's family and is a sequel to his Rain of Gold (LJ 7/91), though it easily stands on its own. The story, tinged with magical realism, is a compelling one, though at times almost too violent and degrading to bear. Reader Dick Hill's Spanish accent seems perfect, and he is excellent with male voices of characters ranging in age from eight to 80. His characterizations of women, however, are undramatized and without nuance. This title will be in demand with lovers of adventure and an interest in Latin ancestry.Preston Hoffman, Shelby, N.C.

    Wonderfull

I love this book. It's the best book that anybody can ever have read. I mean with this book you loose yor virginity. You cry, you feel, you see what's going on. It's like if you were their. Too bad their's only 5 stars because I would give this book all the stars in the world. You might think I'm exagerating with this but I'm not. If you read it you'll know what I mean. I love Jose he was like the hero of this story. After rwading this book I wanted to meet Jose so badly. I wished that I lived in that time to have had the chanse to met him. I also wished I would of met Juan he is a great child, well man right know but in the story his a kid. Jose is my hero. This book had an inpacat in my life that you won't imagine. The author Victor Villasenor is a great writer, and author. When I was reaading the book I could see everything, like if I was there. Maybe I could imagine Los Altos de Jalisco because I'm from Jalisco, Mexico and I know what town, and ranchos look like. I would recomend thid book to anyone. Oh by the way Dona Margarita is a great woman. She always kept her faith.
