Overview

This is the story of the trapper, Link Stevens, and his fearless snow dog, Chiri. It began when the trapper and his dog set out to rescue a naturalist stranded in the perilous Caribou mountains--the impenetrable storm-blasted heights from which no man has ever retumed. Forced to live by Stone Age methods, they relied on every resource of the dog's wild cunning and the trapper's woodlore. How they battled a killer cougar and bloodthirsty wolves, yet brought their man to safety, is a gripping, action-packed saga. It is also the stirring tale of the deep love between a loyal snow dog and his courageous trapper master.

This is one of the most memorable books I read as a young boy. I can still remember the story line of the book and I'm almost 40 with four kids of my own. I'm hunting for every Kjelgaard book I can find because I read most of them when I was young and I want my boys to have the joy of reading them. They truly are unique and priceless works.

This was the most captivating book I read in 5th grade and I read this book countless times. It keeps you enthralled from the first page to the last. I wanted to be Link and that started my quest to be a Park Ranger which I have been for 20 years. Jim Kjelgaard has written some fantastic kids books and this I believe is the best. When I first discovered Mr. Kjelgaard, in our small rural school library he had been gone for 10 years. But I could not get enough of his writing and the librarian kept getting loaners for me to read. Thank you Jim Kjelgaard for taking me on those adventures as a boy.

I just turned 74, and I can say this is my all time favorite book...I read it again yesterday for the umpteenth time (I really can't say how many)..This book was formative to my love of the outdoors, and all things it encompasses...camping, hunting, fishing, survival techniques...it is all there along with courage, the will to do what you promise to do no matter what the obstacles..a GREAT read for someone of any age....

One of the greatest childhood stories I've read! It helped shape me into the outdoorsy mountain backpacking/hiking/exploring guy I've become. Jim Kjelgaard is an amazing writer of children's adventure stories. There's not really a bad one in the bunch, but this particular book (and its predecessor Snow Dog) were particularly wonderful.

A heart warming story of how Link Stevens and his half-wild dog Chiri set out to rescue a man stranded in the wilderness and face many hardships but still bring Trigg Antray to safety is a wonderful tale of one trapper and his dog.
