Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-- The fascinating natural history of the wily North American wild turkey is presented and compared to its domesticated cousin. Patent explores the physical characteristics of both types, emphasizing the sharp eyesight, powerful ability to fly, and extreme wariness of the wild turkey. Its near extinction due to habitat loss and overhunting is discussed, along with the bird's successful return as a result of restocking and careful management. Life cycle and behavior are presented in detail. The final sections discuss the American domestic turkey industry; the issue of factory farming is briefly mentioned. The book is illustrated throughout with excellent full-color photographs. Wonders of Turkeys (Dodd, 1984) by Sigmund A. Lavine and Vincent Scuro covers much the same material, but is illustrated in black-and-white, and has a slightly smaller typeface, making it more difficult for youngsters to read. --Barbara B. Murphy, Shaler Area School District Libraries, Pittsburgh
