Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This spiral-bound book provides a short and basic overview of weather-related phenomena. There is a lot to look at: the pages are full of pictures, sidebars, captions, and charts, and the overall design overwhelms the material. The book is divided into three sections: "Water," "Storms," and "Fire and Ice." Observant readers may well wonder why thunderstorms appear under "Water" while waves and waterspouts appear in the "Storms" section. The method of organization can be distracting. After an introduction by storm chaser and "cyclone cowboy" Warren Faidley, the remaining material is comparable to what a reader might find in any basic text about weather. An explanation of the ingredients that create weather—sun, water, and air—is followed by the text which includes floods, hurricanes, and a page about El Nino. A glossary and an index conclude the book, which is probably best used as a quick reference guide, rather than a text a student might pore over cover to cover. 2005, Kingfisher/Houghton Mifflin, Ages 9 to 12.
