"A fantastic new addition to the Orca Echoes series...Bates has crafted a gripping adventure that will definitely pique and keep the interest of both boys and girls. Her prose...will keep children's adrenaline pumping...There are few true adventure books aimed at the early chapter book crowd, and this one proves to be a must have for all collections. The beautifully detailed illustrations by Kasia Charko will draw readers even more deeply into the story. Highly recommended!"
CM Magazine
"Well-written and will definitely appeal to the intended age group. The story is believable, and suspense and tension heighten as the dark closes in on the kids on the hill. The children make some good decisions about keeping safe on the mountain when they get stuck, and, most importantly, they are active participants in their own rescue...Young readers will admire Jake, Lexie and Tommy's tenacity, teamwork and adventurous spirit and look forward to reading about more of their adventures in future books by Bates. Recommended."

"Children that are just starting to read chapter books will enjoy this...The age range it is intended for will be thrilled with the content. The story flows quickly and is very exciting. There are literally adventures at every turn...This book serves as an example to youngsters of the things that can happen when they go off on their own into the unknown. Perhaps it will prevent some children from venturing off the path or onto a path they are not familiar with and save them from nature."
NMRLS Youth Services Book Review
"A suspenseful book with surprises in every chapter. It is fast-paced and an enjoyable read."
Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
With just an hour of daylight left, Dad is nursing an injured knee when he reluctantly agrees to let Jake (age 9), and Tommy (about age 7) go with their cousin Lexie (age 10) for one more ski run—provided they come down either Easy Street or Gentle Giant. Once they reach the top, Lexie talks Jake into crossing to the other side of the slope to go down Wildcat Run. The trail is steeper than Jake expected and he becomes even more concerned about their choice when they see a cougar chasing a deer just ahead of them. Then Lexie misses a turn and runs into a tree. She regains consciousness quickly, but cannot stand up. Jake searches the backpack his dad has loaned him. He finds a knife, a candle, and a granola bar to share. He builds a shelter and the children huddle together and fall asleep. When they awake, Lexie feels like walking and they find their way back to the lodge in the moonlight, quietly passing the cougar along the way. An exciting survival story for young readers. Tommy looked almost as scared as when they were trapped in Smuggler's Cave last fall. "All right," he said.

Jake and Lexie high-fived each other.

"But you have to go slow," said Tommy. "And wait for me if I get tired."

"Don't worry, Tommy," said Lexie. "We won't let anything happen to you." She grinned. "Wildcat Run, here we come."
